Gao'an Luogu Opera is one of the ancient local operas in Gao'an. It is named because it is performed without orchestral accompaniment and only with gongs and drums. This opera originated during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. It evolved from folk tea songs and lanterns, and absorbed a lot of artistic essence of Gao'an Ruihe Opera. It is deeply loved by the masses for its deep and melodious singing, free and rough performance, easy-to-understand language, and strong life atmosphere. It has been popular on the stage of history for more than 300 years. This opera originated during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty. It originated from folk lanterns and tea picking, so it is commonly known as "lantern class" and "tea picking class". It has gone through four development stages: single-stage opera, couplet opera, three small operas, and robe and belt opera. It entered its heyday from the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China. According to statistics, there were 21 famous troupes during this period. There were more than 160 artists, and the performance area radiated from Gao'an to Fengxin, Shanggao, Xinjian and other counties, and later expanded to Xinyu, Xiushui, Dexing and other places. The performance of Gao'an Luogu Opera is free and rough, full of life interest and pastoral flavor. In the early days, most of the gong and drum opera troupes were amateur in nature, and they only performed after the autumn harvest and during the Spring Festival. "Singing opera to the edge of the field, throwing away the gongs and hammers to work in the field" was a true portrayal of the amateur troupes at that time while farming and singing opera. Some of the gong and drum operas were accompanied by stunt performances, such as spitting fire, playing with snakes, and playing with umbrellas, in order to liven up the atmosphere and attract people. Since the Republic of China, due to the fallacy spread by the reactionary rulers that "good men should not watch "Three Kingdoms" and good women should not watch tea picking opera", the gong and drum opera has been banned and gradually declined. After the founding of New China, the people's government registered the few remaining gong and drum opera artists and organized them into performance groups to tour the countryside. In 1953, Gao'an sent a performance group, the Gao'an gong and drum opera troupe, to Fengxin for development. However, the troupe declined in the middle and was disbanded in 1985. Gao'an gong and drum opera has been in a state of survival of the fittest for a long time. Only a few amateur gong and drum opera troupes survived tenaciously among the people of Gao'an, and they were in urgent need of rescue and protection. In August 2013, with the approval of the Jiangxi Provincial People's Government, Gao'an Luogu Opera was included in the fourth batch of provincial intangible cultural heritage list.
