🎧  Listen to Introduction

According to historical records, sedan chairs were a means of transportation in the Eastern Han Dynasty. They were later used by brides to get married in sedan chairs, and gradually became popular in the Tang Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, old Beijingers regarded the wedding of a girl in a sedan chair as a sign of a formal marriage. Therefore, the sedan chair industry was the most prosperous at that time, and there were sedan chair shops in all parts of the country that specialized in renting sedan chairs, gongs and drums, deacons, and colorful clothes. Li Liansheng studied under Xu Chang (1921-2007) and Li Shun (1926-2009), and systematically mastered the full set of wedding customs and etiquette related to the sedan chair. His sedan chairs combined the strengths of many schools and were full of modern flavor, and were deeply loved by the people.
