Confucius worship ceremony
The Confucius worship ceremony is a folk custom item in the sixth batch of representative items of Suzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. Suzhou Confucian Temple (Fuxue) was founded by Fan Zhongyan, a famous politician and writer in the Northern Song Dynasty in the second year of Jingyou (1035). It is the largest Confucius Temple in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai and the second largest in the country. The Confucius worship is a grand ceremony held in the Confucius Temple to honor and remember Confucius. From ancient times to the present, this is the place where the people of Suzhou City hold the Confucius worship ceremony and express their respect for the great sage Confucius. In the eleventh year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty, Zheng Zhongxiong wrote "Records of the Reconstruction of the Dacheng Hall in Wu County", which is the earliest document discovered to record the Confucius worship activities in Suzhou Confucian Temple. Since then, the Confucius worship activities have continued until nearly half a century. On September 24, 2006, to commemorate the 2557th anniversary of Confucius' birth, Shuangta Street and Suzhou Confucian Temple held the first Confucius worship activity in Suzhou since the founding of the People's Republic of China, and it has been held annually since then. The Confucius worship activities are divided into two major sections: traditional sacrificial ceremonies and modern displays. The general procedure is to offer three kinds of sacrifices, offer rice, offer fruits, read sacrificial texts, perform six kinds of children's dances, play "Dacheng Music", sing "Dacheng Music", and sing "Song of Confucius". Then a large-scale song and dance evening will be held (including traditional opera singing, intangible cultural heritage display, and elegant song and dance performances). All procedures, dances, music, and props of the Confucius ceremony in Suzhou Confucian Temple have historical basis and fully reflect historical authenticity; but new cultural elements that reflect the characteristics of the times have been added to the activities to show the cultural taste and artistic charm of the Confucius ceremony. Restoring the Confucius ceremony and vividly presenting the ancient customs to people is the inheritance and promotion of Chinese traditional culture, and has cultural and historical value. The Confucius ceremony in Suzhou Confucian Temple is closely related to the spread of Confucianism in Suzhou and the development of Suzhou's education. It is an important material for studying the history of Suzhou's thought and education, and has scientific research value. The Confucius ceremony in Suzhou Confucian Temple is dignified and grand, with beautiful music and dance, and has artistic aesthetic value. The Confucius worship ceremony can also meet the desire and demand of contemporary people for traditional cultural education, and inspire people to think and explore how to solve a series of problems such as the various crises that have emerged after human society entered the industrialization and information age, which has a practical significance.
