Jintan woodblock printing technique
Chinese woodblock printing originated in the Tang Dynasty, developed in the Song Dynasty, flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and declined in the late Qing Dynasty. It is the product of the combination of canal culture and commercial urban culture. In 2009, woodblock printing technology was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. As one of the three major woodblock printing protection bases in China, Yangzhou has continued for thousands of years with the birth of woodblock printing technology. At the beginning of the last century, Geng Wenbing, a native of Jintan, went to Yangzhou to learn the technology, and combined it with the intangible cultural heritage of Jintan to develop it into a woodblock workshop with local characteristics. After four generations of inheritance, continuous innovation and expansion, it is now a key cultural and technological enterprise in Jiangsu Province. Jintan woodblock thread binding technology mainly includes woodblock printing, embossing, woodblock watermarking and thread binding. This technology not only has specific selection of materials and tools, but also has strict requirements for each process such as plate making and engraving. Woodblock printing is a living fossil in the history of world printing. Woodblock carving and paper and silk printing carry a profound historical culture. Papermaking, ink making, carving, and copying condense excellent traditional crafts. The arched pattern, the highest skill of traditional woodblock watermarking, is a masterpiece in the history of Chinese woodblock printing. The color-separated woodblocks are overprinted one by one, without ink marks, and dark patterns are embossed. The agility of the picture has the flavor of the five-color "饾饤"; the layers of relief have the beauty of form and spirit of Chinese painting. Thread binding began in the Ming Dynasty and was completed in the Song Dynasty. Jintan ancient books use Jingxian Xuan paper as the main material, and the color Xuan printing technology has reached the top level in China. Innovative binding and cover technology have been continuously broken through, and the output works have won the highest awards in the printing industry at home and abroad. In 2000, Jintan Ancient Books Printing Factory Co., Ltd. was put into operation. As the carrier of the inheritance of Jintan woodblock thread binding printing technology, the company, under the leadership of contemporary inheritors such as Geng Wangxiu, has gradually formed a backbone team dedicated to the restoration and production of traditional skills. So far, it has printed more than 3,000 ancient books, including "Reproduction of Rare Books in China", "Complete Library in Four Branches of Literature", "Ten Bamboo Studio Paper Collection", "Water Margin Characters and Images", etc. Most of them are national cultural projects, which have been highly recognized and evaluated by the industry. It has established regular cooperation alliances with dozens of companies such as the National Library Press and Zhonghua Book Company. The inheritance method of family, master-apprentice and group and the dynamic industrial operation model have enabled the skills to continue to flourish and be better protected and inherited.
