🎧  Listen to Introduction

Jinling seal carving is a traditional art project in the fourth batch of representative projects of municipal intangible cultural heritage. During the Warring States Period, Chinese seal carving art matured and developed rapidly; in the Qin and Han Dynasties, it was the peak period in the history of the development of Chinese seal carving art, an extremely important and glorious era. Chinese seal carving developed to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368 AD). Before Zhao Mengfu, literati designed seals and then craftsmen carved them. Since Wang Mian first used steatite to carve seals, the literati seal carving art was initiated. In the Ming Dynasty, after Wen Peng discovered that seals could be made from light-frozen stone in Nanjing, the literati seal carving art flourished. In addition, Nanjing was the capital of the early Ming Dynasty at that time, so it became the place where Chinese seal carving art entered the "literati seal carving" boom. During the Republic of China, Nanjing, the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, once again became the political, economic and cultural center of the country. For a time, many talented people came and masters gathered, presenting a very prosperous scene. During this period, due to the establishment of the National Seal Casting Bureau, famous seal carvers who were once active in the north, such as Yi Dachang and Wang Fuchang in the south, moved south and gathered on the banks of the Qinhuai River. Together with Ding Erzhong and others who had lived in Nanjing earlier and sold seals to support themselves, they formed an important force in the Chinese seal circle at that time, and played a positive role in promoting the development of seal carving art in Nanjing and its surrounding areas. "Jinling Seal Carving" was initially loose, and then gradually grew until it occupied an important position in the country. It once became the center of national seal carving art activities at that time, and formed a tripartite situation with the "Haipai" in Shanghai in the south, the "Zhepai" in Zhejiang, and the "Jingpai" in Beijing. However, with the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War and the fall of Nanjing, the seal carvers of "Jinling Seal Carving" dispersed. In the 1970s, predecessors such as Wu Zhongqi, Chen Dayu, Wang Yiyu, Shi Xuehong, etc. formed a society in Qinhuai District, Nanjing, and founded the Nanjing Seal Society, which was located at the home of Master Wang Yiyu on Mochou Road in Qinhuai District, so "Jinling Seal Carving" became glorious again. The creation method of "Jinling Seal Carving" adheres to the three elements of seal carving, namely "calligraphy, composition, and knife skills", among which the calligraphy is elegant, the composition is wonderful, and the knife skills are smooth. The style of "Jinling Seal Carving" is inclusive and eclectic, with diverse aesthetics and broad tolerance. Each has its own characteristics and schools, presenting a state of flourishing.
