🎧  Listen to Introduction

Jinling bamboo carving is one of the famous traditional handicrafts in Nanjing. During the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty, Li Yao, a Jinling native, was the pioneer of Jinling bamboo carving. During the Wanli period, Pu Zhongqian, based on the characteristics of Li Yao's fan bone carving, founded the Jinling bamboo carving school with simple and shallow features, which influenced the whole country. It was even more prosperous during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty. Pan Xifeng, who had a high artistic talent, further innovated on the basis of his predecessors, with more exquisite skills, and more subjects and shapes than before. During the Jiaqing and Daoguang years, Fang Jie became the leader of Jinling bamboo carving. He was good at poetry, calligraphy and painting, and was good at iron pen. He was especially good at bamboo carving. He was called "Fang Zhu". He took the art of Jinling bamboo carving to a higher level. By the 1930s and 1940s, there were still 50 to 60 artists engaged in bamboo carving in Nanjing. Most of the shops and workshops were concentrated in the south of the city. After liberation, most bamboo carving artists worked in the Qinhuai Fan Making Society, and a few worked in the Arts and Crafts Research Office (later changed to a research institute) of the Municipal Arts and Crafts Company. After the 1970s, artists worked in arts and crafts companies. Jinling bamboo carving has outstanding characteristics and high cultural and artistic value. In the middle of the Ming Dynasty, Jinling bamboo carving and Jiading bamboo carving were listed as the two major schools of bamboo carving art in my country at that time. In the Qing Dynasty, Jinling bamboo carving was further developed. Jinling bamboo carving's "green retention" shallow carving is its craft feature, which is very different from the "commercial, deep, and transparent" bamboo carving style in Jiading and other places. Jinling bamboo carving is simple and elegant due to its shape, and is good at bamboo carving calligraphy, adding a literati atmosphere. Pan Xifeng, Fang Jie and others in the Qing Dynasty were all literati bamboo carvers.
