Woodcarving (Nanjing antique woodcarving) According to the "Continuation of Jinling Trivia", there was already a woodcarving industry in Nanjing in the middle of the Ming Dynasty, including antique restoration woodcarving. In the Qing Dynasty, the Shan family woodcarving business was already famous in Nanjing. During the Republic of China period, Dan Yuanchun, a descendant of the Shan family, inherited the family business and had exquisite woodcarving skills. In the early 1980s, Dan Bajin, the grandson of Dan Yuanchun, inherited the craftsmanship of his ancestors and engaged in antique woodcarving in the Nanjing Craft Carving Factory. In the 1950s, the Nanjing Craft Carving Factory, which belonged to the Municipal Arts and Crafts Company, developed antique woodcarving varieties, mainly relief products. Later, round sculptures were added, such as antique bronze utensils, Tianji bottles, squatting lions, and the three stars of Fu Lu Shou, etc., and then imitated Tang Sancai horses, which became the main products. After continuous improvement and improvement, it formed a unique feature and was welcomed in the foreign trade market. At the same time, the factory also undertook the carving and restoration tasks of ancient buildings such as the main temples in Nanjing at that time, such as the carved eaves and flower walls of the Drum Tower, the Dragon and Phoenix Pagoda, and the Lingta of Linggu Temple. In particular, the "Twenty Gods" and the statues of Weituo and Maitreya in the Bilu Hall of Qixia Temple in the early 1980s were all completed by Nanjing antique woodcarving technicians. In the 20 years from the 1970s to the early 1990s, Nanjing antique woodcarving products were one of the main export categories of Nanjing's craft industry at that time. Shortly after entering the 1990s, due to the discontinuation of the main product of Nanjing Craft Carving Factory, the factory shifted, and the large-scale production of antique woodcarving also stopped. At present, only a few inheritors such as Wang Xuelong are making it. Nanjing antique woodcarving is unique in the country with its antique-like characteristics. It has created antique-like woodcarving products, which together with ivory carvings have formed Nanjing's unique antique carving system. Nanjing antique woodcarving has high artistic value, unique shapes, and a variety of varieties. There are both antique artifacts, such as imitation bronzes, and figures, flowers and birds, and animals. Among them, the imitation Tang horse is the most distinctive and has the greatest influence. At the same time, Buddhist themes are also widely used. Nanjing antique woodcarvings have distinct local characteristics. They are not simply imitations, but creations based on the essence of ancient cultural relics and the local characteristics of Nanjing arts and crafts. For example, the imitation of Tang Sancai horses is not exactly the same in content, shape, and momentum as Tang Sancai. Another example is that Nanjing's unique gold foil gilding technique is used when making them old, and after polishing, they are mottled and antique.
