Xuanwu Lake Chrysanthemum Fair is a folklore project in the fourth batch of representative projects of municipal intangible cultural heritage. Xuanwu Lake, as a royal garden in the Six Dynasties period, has a history of planting chrysanthemums. Since 211 AD, chrysanthemums have developed into palace ornaments and become ornamental plants for emperors, generals, princes and nobles. During the Six Dynasties period, chrysanthemums were widely planted among the people, and the trend of chrysanthemum appreciation was formed. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, the planting of chrysanthemums in Xuanwu Lake was already famous in Jinling. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the chrysanthemums planted in Xuanwu Lake had spread overseas. According to historical records, the Xuanwu Lake Chrysanthemum Exhibition began in the 17th year of the Republic of China (1928). In November of the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947), the Garden Management Office of the Nanjing Municipal Government held the unprecedented "First Chrysanthemum Fair in the Capital" at Xuanwu Lake. The main venue was set up at the Cuizhou Music Stage. The four characters "Chrysanthemum Fair" made of yellow chrysanthemums in front of the venue were particularly eye-catching. Colorful flags were flying all around, and the participating chrysanthemums displayed on the exhibition stand were all labeled and named for the judges to select. For example, the "Winging Orioles in the Willow Waves", "White Crane Returning to the Wind", "Golden Hook Hanging the Moon", "Green Silk Thousand Threads", etc., were all excellent products among the participating contestants. This chrysanthemum conference adopted the method of simultaneous selection and sales, which was well received by visitors and exhibitors. Although the scale and content of the "First Chrysanthemum Conference in the Capital" were not as large as the chrysanthemum exhibitions held in Xuanwu Lake after the founding of the People's Republic of China, it played a role in inheriting the past and ushering in the future for the future chrysanthemum exhibitions held in Xuanwu Lake. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Xuanwu Lake Management Office successfully held chrysanthemum exhibitions many times, which won Xuanwu Lake a high reputation. Since the exhibition site was basically set up in Liangzhou, it was known as the "Liangzhou Autumn Chrysanthemum". On October 26, 2001, the "Seventh China Chrysanthemum Variety Exhibition" opened in Xuanwu Lake. This was the first time that Xuanwu Lake held a national chrysanthemum exhibition since the founding of the People's Republic of China. Nearly 40 units from 12 provinces and cities across the country have built 21 outdoor attractions with chrysanthemums as the theme in Xuanwu Lake, which means that China has entered the new 21st century after the reform and opening up. The Xuanwu Lake Chrysanthemum Exhibition is held almost every year and has become an important traditional garden event in the scenic area. It has also made Xuanwu Lake one of the best places to appreciate chrysanthemums in Nanjing in autumn. It has been awarded the title of "Our Festival" demonstration base and is welcomed by the general public. In 2011, the "Xuanwu Lake Chrysanthemum Exhibition" was rated as an intangible cultural heritage of Xuanwu District.
