The four stages of marriage in the Xunle Miao ethnic group

The marriage of Xunle Miao people is generally divided into four stages: meeting, falling in love, testing and getting married. Miao people are hardworking and kind-hearted. They live in the mountains. They are usually busy with their livelihoods and rarely go out. Young men and women usually meet and fall in love at the Lusheng dance. The Miao people in this township mainly have five surnames: Wei, Liang, Long, Shi and Wang. Each surname has traditional customs. For example, the Wei family attaches great importance to the New Year's Eve, the Liang family attaches great importance to the "Lantern Festival", the Long family attaches great importance to the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, and the Wang family attaches great importance to the Mid-Autumn Festival. No matter which festival it is, they will be led by several older elders to organize a grand Lusheng dance. The family that attaches great importance to the festival will be the host. On that day, the "host" will invite people of the same tribe within a radius of dozens of miles to their village to celebrate the Lusheng dance. At the dance, young people will dance to their heart's content while secretly observing and searching for their ideal person. Once the young man has chosen the target, he will actively approach the other party with singing and dancing. If the other party is interested, they will exchange glances, understand each other, and dance gracefully. This is love. After dancing for a while, the man seizes the opportunity to dance and retreat. The woman understands and follows the dance steps. They both withdraw from the revelry of the Lusheng circle and come to the big tree at the head and end of the village, singing folk songs beside the bamboo forest, using songs to explore feelings, ask and understand each other's situation. When the song is in harmony, the two sides will give each other tokens. This is love. At dawn, the woman will go to the man's home with him and live in the man's house for several days, so that the two sides can further understand each other's personality, character, knowledge, skills, etc. But they eat and live in different rooms, because both sides are very strict with the ancestral teachings and restrain their love. After several days of getting along and observing, if they have the same interests and the man follows the woman's wishes, the man will escort the woman home. When going out, the man should open an umbrella for the woman and walk in front, and the man should carry a sharp sword behind him. Because the Miao people live in mountainous areas, poisonous snakes and beasts often appear in the forests and wild paths. Swords and umbrellas are the weapons that the Miao people use to defeat demons. When arriving at the woman's home, her parents and brothers will kill chickens and ducks to entertain them. This is a trial. After the "trial" stage, if both parties are satisfied, the man will choose an auspicious day to welcome the bride. When welcoming the bride, the man's family selects five young men from the tribe, two men and three women, to form a wedding team, and carry a strange load to the woman's home. At both ends of the load hang a chicken and a duck tied by a hemp rope, and the rope is tied tightly with a knot. The next day, the woman's family tied a knot with a fragrant glutinous rice cake and a chicken and a duck, and then selected a few girls and boys who are good at speaking from the tribe to accompany the bride to the man's home, and the two lovers officially became husband and wife. Since the implementation of family planning and eugenics policies, the Miao marriage customs have added new content, that is, first go to the township government to obtain a marriage certificate and birth permit, and then hold a wedding ceremony, combining traditional marriage virtues with modern civilization to make it more civilized and progressive.
