Placing pigs and sheep is a folk activity held by villagers in Shuolian Village, Xinheng Town, Jiedong County on the 16th and 17th day of the first lunar month every year to worship the God of Wealth Zhao Gongming and Guan Gong. It is hosted by the ten natural villages (commonly known as the Ten Communities) under Shuolian Village in turn, and each natural village takes the turn to place pigs and sheep once every ten years. Villagers celebrate their prosperous and healthy lives in the past year through a series of folk activities of placing pigs and sheep every year, and at the same time pray for good weather, prosperous business, good luck and a happy life in the new year. The custom of placing pigs and sheep in Shuolian Village originated in the middle of the Ming Dynasty, and has a history of more than 500 years. In the middle of the Ming Dynasty, the development of industry and commerce made some clans become wealthy families. In order to look forward to prosperous business and to reconcile with other clans in the surrounding neighborhood, they raised and slaughtered large pigs or fat sheep and placed them in front of the altar to worship the God of Wealth Zhao Gongming and Guan Gong. After the worship, they distributed them to neighbors, relatives and friends. With the development of social economy, various ethnic groups have joined the settlement, and they also follow the local customs. Each household has the ability to place pigs and sheep to worship the God of Wealth. From the late Qing Dynasty to the modern times, Shuolian Village has gradually developed into 52 surnames and 20 communities (natural villages). In order to reduce the burden, the elders of the village agreed that 10 of the larger communities would take turns to place pigs and sheep every year, so that this unique folk custom continues to this day. The host community of each year began to prepare in the previous year, raising large pigs and fat sheep. On the 15th day of the first lunar month, the Lantern Festival, every household decorated with lanterns and flowers, slaughtered large boars and rams, and then placed them on a "Hui"-shaped wooden frame, stuffed oranges into the mouths of the pigs and sheep, and the pigs and sheep were pasted with the word "Ji" or double happiness, which means good luck. Nearly a thousand pigs and sheep in the village were placed together closely, and the scene was very spectacular. During the event, cultural and artistic activities such as lion dance, flag-raising gong and drum team, Chaozhou opera performance, and lantern competition were also held.
