Legend has it that the history of the pig-raising competition in Shanchong Village, Changtai County, Zhangzhou City began in 669 AD, when Xue Wuhui, the "military commander" of Chen Yuanguang, the "King of Kaizhang", was ordered to lead his troops to Shanchong, and later settled and multiplied here. Because of his prominent achievements, the Xue family set up the Wuxian Gate when they built their ancestral temple, and according to folk customs, they could place live pigs and sheep for sacrifice. Every year on the eighth day of the first lunar month, people offer sacrifices to their ancestors here and compete to see who has the largest pig. Every year on the eighth day of the first lunar month, a grand ceremony of "Shanchong Pig-raising Competition for a Good Harvest" is held at the Xue family temple. The head of the Xue clan throws the divination cup, and the list of people reported on the list is determined in order from the oldest to the youngest. According to this rule, it takes about 30 years for each villager to raise pigs in turn, and some families can only raise pigs once in their lifetime. Therefore, the Xue family is proud of raising pigs in turn. In order to win the glory of the eighth day of the first lunar month, the villagers are willing to work for one or even two years and feed the pigs with the best concentrate. During the competition, the net weight of the pig (i.e. the weight without the pig's internal organs) is taken. The slaughtered pig is "scraped" on a bamboo rack and carried by several strong men. The owner leads the way in front and the band beats and beats in the back. It is sent to the Xue's ancestral temple after the first round in the village. That night, the participating pigs are arranged in the ancestral temple, all with red oranges in their mouths (meaning good luck), wearing red satin, and green bamboo leaves in their heads. The "champion pig" is the most magnificent, with another sheep on the body and two golden flowers inserted; the "runner-up pig" is covered with fat and a golden flower inserted. For more than 1,300 years, the Shanzhong pig race to pray for a good harvest has evolved into a pig-raising competition, showing the people's hard work to get rich and the good wishes of "raising big pigs, passing on skills, ensuring safety, and celebrating a good harvest."
