🎧  Listen to Introduction

Chengwu drum is one of the more ancient types of music. It is said to have a history of hundreds of years. After being processed, refined, modified and created by generations of folk artists, it has been gradually improved in terms of production technology and performance techniques. The folk drum in southwest Shandong is also called "cowhide drum" because it is made of cowhide. Because its diameter can reach two meters, it looks like a millstone, so it is also called "millstone drum". According to the records of Chengwu County, folk drums were more popular in Chengwu County during the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China. On major festivals, harvest celebrations, worshiping gods and praying for rain, opening temples, attending temple fairs, continuing family genealogies, sending off the god of fire, and making a fuss about the Lantern Festival, people beat drums to celebrate. The sound of the drums can be heard for more than ten miles. In special circumstances, such as putting out fires and saving people, catching thieves and robbers, they also beat drums as a signal. It is said that this is a continuation of the drums used in ancient wars to urge troops. In the past, except for the chaotic years, the masses would start practicing the drum almost as soon as the twelfth lunar month entered the winter idle season, and practice until the 16th day of the first lunar month. The drum teams would take to the streets to show off their playing skills, to see who played better and who played more. Especially in the folk art festivals held in Chengwu in recent years, the drum team cooperated with the yangko team and the suona team to show their skills, and the drum sound could be heard for more than ten miles. During the "Cultural Revolution", the folk drum in southwest Shandong was interrupted for nearly ten years, and most of the original drums and bronzes were damaged. This folk culture and art was on the verge of being lost. In order to promote national culture and save and excavate cultural heritage, in 1995, with the support of relevant leaders, more than a dozen drum teams in Chengwu County purchased and made a batch of drums. According to exchanges between drum teams, drum teams in Heze, Juye, Dingtao, Cao County and other places are also active in urban and rural areas. In particular, the Dongmenli drum team in Chengwu County took the lead in making a drum with a diameter of two meters, which was praised as "the first drum in southwest Shandong" by "Rural Masses", "Rural Life News", "News Picture Weekly", "Heze Daily" and provincial and municipal TV stations. The drum beats of folk drums are all passed down by old artists, without written scores. In order to save this cultural heritage, Chengwu County Cultural Center and old drum artists have excavated and sorted out a batch of drum scores, which has played a positive role in the inheritance of drum performance. The drum team of folk drums has large teams and small teams. Generally, there are more than ten people in the small team and more than thirty people in the large team. The long-diameter drum needs two people to beat it, accompanied by a big gong, a big cymbal, and a big cymbal. From the commonly used drum beats, some are cheerful, passionate, warm, rough, strong, nervous and other emotions; from the perspective of drumming techniques, commonly used techniques include hitting the heart of the drum, hitting the edge of the drum, hitting the drum, hitting the drum with a single hammer, hitting with two hammers, light hammering, and heavy hammering. The arrangement of the folk drum players is: drum in front, gong opposite, cymbals on the left, and cymbals on the right. Behind the drummer is a team of people, beating the rhythm and learning from others. Its drum music scores are commonly used: "Big Victory", "Small Victory", "Ping Pong Pong", "Shui Luoyin", "Cang Ba", "Ba Fan Zi", "Five Cymbals and Two Hairpins", "Six Cymbals and Four Hairpins", "One Tune Dragon", "Four Dog Bites", "One Drop of Oil", "One Turn", "One Say One", "One Bounce Di", "One Side Get", "Za Lai Za", "One More", "Ge Lao Ba", "Yang Di Tou", "Small Eight Sticks", "Four Big Chuai", "Ice Eight", "Noisy Chang'an", "Big Eight Sticks", "Yi Chui Yi", "One Ling Kang", "One Nest of Wind", "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea", "Eleven Gongs", "Horse Five Naochang" and more than 100 other drum beats.
