🎧  Listen to Introduction

Willow weaving has a long history and profound cultural heritage, and its history can be traced back to more than 500 years. According to legend, Liu Qi, the deputy general of Yue Fei in the Northern Song Dynasty, ordered the people to weave baskets and ordered the soldiers to build a platform in the west of Huanggang to celebrate the victory of defeating Jin Wushu. This platform is known as the "Heshengtai". During major folk festivals, local people use willow branches to make dragons and phoenixes to show good luck. The weaving process of willow weaving is complicated, the workmanship is fine, and the craftsmanship is original and unique. It is purely hand-woven. As for traditional vases, from the upper warp plate bottom to the closing and holding the edge, almost no tools are used. Even the beams and molds are all "handmade" of local products. However, the woven products have a tight structure and a round shape. The degree of fineness is amazing, which can be said to be the fine products of traditional willow weaving craftsmanship! "Jingbian" and "Libian" are original crafts created by willow weaving artists along the Huai Mengwa, and have extremely high historical heritage value. Willow weaving is an exquisite craft, passed down from generation to generation by artists. It is an extremely valuable resource of folk handicraft skills. Its products appear simple and elegant through coloring and dyeing, and have extremely high artistic value. Willow weaving products are sturdy and durable, simple and generous, pollution-free, harmless, and pure natural specialty products, which are increasingly favored by people at home and abroad. However, due to the difficulty of willow weaving technology, the long learning cycle, and the complex processes such as scraping and baking, it is particularly hard to make. Some old artists have passed away one after another, and young people are unwilling to learn, resulting in part of the craft being lost and facing an endangered situation. Willow weaving has played a positive role in a long history of social development. It is an important part of the production, life, culture and art, and social development of the people on both sides of the Huaihe River. It is of great significance to inherit, protect, and develop this precious historical and cultural heritage.
