Gu'an willow weaving craftsmanship
Gu'an County has convenient transportation, developed culture, distinct four seasons, and abundant products. The Yongding River and Daqing River flow through the county. The northern part is mostly sandy Mongolian land with many trees and willows everywhere. Since the Ming Dynasty, the planting of willows has been vigorously promoted, and the willow weaving skills have also rapidly emerged and developed day by day. According to the county annals, Gu'an willow weaving originated in the 43rd year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty. Gu'an willow weaving has a long history and a wide variety of varieties. It has a history of nearly 500 years. Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty once issued an edict that "a variety of basket willows should be planted on the embankments on both sides of the Yongding River, the embankments near the river, and the soft beaches". The intention was to prevent floods, and it also provided raw materials for willow weaving, and the willow weaving industry has been further developed accordingly. You Zhikai, who lived on the Yongding River, once recorded: "People carrying bundles of goods were crowded together, all of which were willow products. The baskets were particularly exquisite, and thousands of people would stand there in a rush at noon. Poor couples weaved day and night to make a living." In the 32nd year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu (1906), Gu'an County prepared to establish a chamber of commerce, and in the 3rd year of the Republic of China (1914), the chamber of commerce established a willow product trade union. In March 1931, the Gu'an County Willow Weaving Professional Union was established, with 416 members. In the early Republic of China, the Qiliu Company was established, and then the Shengda Company was established to purchase willow products and paint and decorate them. The main products were willow boxes, willow buckets, willow liters, kaolu (pig nests), as well as e crowns, screens, snuff bottles and other handicrafts. There are also baskets, baskets, baskets, dustpans, strainers, etc. After the founding of New China, willow weaving has developed by leaps and bounds. Main products: baskets, dustpans, horse hoppers, water buckets, water pitchers, grain buckets, scoop buckets, cellar buckets, lantern buckets, safety helmets, suitcases, coffee tables, fruit baskets, flower baskets, bread baskets, gift baskets, cutlery trays, multi-layer hanging baskets, jewelry boxes, etc. Gu'an's comprehensive and exquisite willow weaving technology has reached a very high level. However, with the sudden rise of Shandong willow weaving, it has a tendency to lead the country. In addition, Gu'an's own willow weaving business has also shown a state of decline. The planting area of Qi willow in the county has dropped from 8,000 acres in 1951 to less than 100 acres now. The number of weaving workers has now decreased by more than 90%. Willow products are mostly sold domestically, and fewer are entering the international market. The momentum and scale are no longer the same as before.
