Fanchang is a place with a long history. Since the establishment of Chungu County in the second year of Yuanfeng in the Western Han Dynasty (109 BC), it has a history of more than 2,000 years. Fanchang folk songs have a wide range of content and rich melodies. The language is simple, vivid, concise, and easy to understand. It is close to spoken language without any craftsmanship; the tunes are fresh, fluent, elegant, and unadorned, and can be said to be spontaneous. After liberation, Fanchang folk songs entered a heyday of development. Collecting, arranging, singing, and composing folk songs became popular. Fanchang folk songs cover a wide range of themes. Production folk songs involve all kinds of farm work in spring, summer, autumn, and winter; life folk songs include awe and worship of nature, praise and respect for the achievements of ancestors, and yearning for a happy life in the future; some love folk songs express feelings directly, and some express their feelings to each other. Fanchang folk songs can be divided into mountain songs, calls, ditties, yangko, dance songs, and folk etiquette songs. They are generally three-character, five-character, and seven-character sentences. They are passed down orally, simple and easy to understand, but some folk songs have elegant lyrics and pay more attention to rhyme. The structure of folk songs is relatively complete. For example, productive folk songs will fully describe the whole process of labor. The dialects of different regions interpret folk songs in a colorful way. There is a custom of dragon boat racing in the Dragon Boat Festival in May in Fanchang, so there are also a considerable number of dragon boat racing songs and children's songs.
