Huaibei Huagu Opera is popular within the border of Jiangsu and Anhui in the north, and in the smaller area north of Suzhou and the Ruihe River. It is one of the rare operas with unique style. Huaibei Huagu Opera originated in the early Ming Dynasty. In the early 1950s, there were more than 100 folk Huagu Opera bands in Huaibei and Feng, Pei, Xiao, and Dang areas. The main tunes of Huaibei Huagu Opera include Suzhou Tune, Ruibei Tune, Kouzi Tune, Hanban, etc. The dances are of two types, "Yahuachang" and "Daxiaowuchang", with both civil and martial arts. Singing and chanting are integrated. The roles are complete and the repertoire is rich, totaling more than 170, including 110 major plays, more than 60 minor plays, and 72 skits. The singing of Huaibei Huagu Opera is mournful and lingering, and the "Handiao" is particularly representative. It is sung like crying, complaining, and sighing, unique and full of personality. The stage performance of Huaibei Huagu Opera has completely preserved the original state of "virtual performance" of traditional opera. All scenes are purely expressed by virtual techniques, and male and female actors can play various roles. "Huagu Dahuachang" is the most distinctive "unique skill" of Huaibei Huagu Opera. The performance form is that the male role carries a flower drum (called "drum rack"). The colorful dance postures are displayed in "pan drum" and "eight sentences". The female role ties embroidered balls on the head, dances with long silk in the hands, and ties special wooden pads on the feet. The performance technology is difficult, and the actors need to have deep basic skills and performance techniques. In the development history of Huaibei Huagu Opera, many outstanding performing artists have emerged.
