🎧  Listen to Introduction

The sheepskin Duangong dance is a unique folk dance of the Qiang people. The ancient Qiang people are a people who believe in many gods. Duangong is a religious professional who does not separate from production in Qiang society. He specializes in activities such as sacrifice, fulfilling vows and calming the spirits, exorcising ghosts, curing diseases, removing filth, summoning souls, eliminating disasters, as well as the marriage of men and women, naming babies, burying the dead and transcending the souls. Duangong is called "Xu", "Abba Xu", "Shibi", "Bi", "Shizhuo" and so on in Qiang language. Duangong is a messenger who reaches the realm of gods and ghosts, and has the nature of both priests and wizards. They are also the epitome of knowledge of Qiang social culture. Qiang proverb says: "The higher the official, the higher the Duangong." Therefore, Duangong has a high status among the Qiang people. Duangong's magic tools are their magic weapons for communicating with ghosts and gods. They must not be moved without reason, and it is forbidden for others to touch them. Most of Duangong's important magic tools are passed down from master to apprentice. The five heads on the head are Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. The ancestor of Duangong is in the middle, Confucianism is on the left, and Buddhism is on the right. Wearing it on the head is to respect the ancestors. The seven iron coins under the handle of the single-sided sheepskin drum represent the seven stars. One is to balance the fan, and the other is to make a harmonious and crisp sound during the performance. During the New Year and other festivals, the Qiang people always invite the Duangong to pray for peace and success. The colorful war skirts represent festivity. The sheepskin Duangong dance is rare nowadays. There are only a few Qiang people who perform the sheepskin Duangong dance in Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County. The Qiang Duangong has been passed down from master to apprentice for generations. To learn Duangong, you must first worship a teacher and make a wish. Since the Qiang Duangong has scriptures but no books, and has classics but no texts, teaching is entirely based on oral transmission and continuous practice. It usually takes three to five years to learn Duangong. After completing the study, you must fulfill your wish and hold a thank-you ceremony for the teacher, "covering the hexagram", and wear a monkey skin hat to be considered a master.
