Ning'an Manchu embroidery is one of the traditional embroidery techniques of the Manchu people. The mural of Princess Zhenxiao exhibited at the ruins of Longquanfu in Shangjing, Bohai today proves that it began in the Bohai period. It is rough and simple, with exaggerated shapes, ingenious composition, bright colors, and strong contrast between cold and warm. It has a heavy cultural connotation and distinct ethnic and folk characteristics. Ning'an Manchu embroidery is mostly embroidered on daily necessities, such as cheongsam borders, pillow flowers, curtains, shoe flowers, children's hat flowers, purse flowers, cushions, etc. Due to the popularity of embroidery in Manchu families, embroidery has gradually become a necessary household furnishing and women's dowry. The representative work of Ning'an Manchu embroidery is pillow top embroidery. The Manchu people often use cloth pillows as rectangular hexahedrons, and decorate them with embroidered Naduo at the two ends to form colorful pillow top embroidery. It usually adopts the method of embroidery, that is, according to the designed square pattern, the five-color thread is used to embroider the pattern on the sizing and relatively stiff gauze, mostly with the red, yellow, blue and white colors of the Eight Banners of the Manchu nationality as the keynote, with elegant composition, bright and harmonious colors, and quite characteristic of the folk culture of the Manchu nationality. The embroidery themes include landscapes, flowers and birds, grass insects, animals, figures, characters, etc. The embroidery methods include satin embroidery, cloth embroidery, embroidery, braided yarn, cut embroidery, cross stitch, package embroidery, mending embroidery, etc. The needlework methods include flat stitch, reverse stitch, long stitch, wrong stitch, net stitch, lock stitch, as well as embroidery, gold plaiting, velvet laying, velvet scraping, and cross stitching. The patterns are mostly about fortune, happiness, longevity, wealth, eight treasures, auspiciousness, etc., which contain auspicious meanings and express good wishes.
