Xiuyan Manchu folk embroidery refers to the embroidery art that is popular among the Manchu people in Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County, Liaoning Province. It is the product of learning Han embroidery. It is mainly made of satin fabrics, yarn, and coarse cloth, such as embroidered clothes, embroidered jackets, and embroidered shoes. There are many embroidery methods, including tying embroidery, satin embroidery, cutting embroidery, mending embroidery, wrapping embroidery, and weaving embroidery. It has a high artistic level and shows the ancient folk customs of the ancestors of the Manchu and Han people and the wisdom of the women of the Eight Banners. In 2008, it was included in the second batch of China's national intangible cultural heritage list. There are more than ten ethnic groups distributed in Xiuyan Manchu Autonomous County, including Manchu, Han, Hui, Xian, Mongolian, and Xibe, among which the Manchu population accounts for more than 80% of the total population. Xiuyan Manchu folk culture has a profound accumulation, a wide range of traditional folk handicrafts, and a long history of learning advanced Han culture. Manchu folk embroidery is one of them. In the Qing Dynasty, embroidery was deeply loved by people and became the most distinctive folk art of the Manchu ethnic group and has lasted for a long time. Most Manchu women are versatile in farming and weaving, especially the Manchu women in Xiuyan. If they cannot embroider or tie embroidery before marriage, it is difficult for them to get married. Most banner families must let their girls learn this craft before marriage and prepare dowries. Manchu folk embroidery is very practical and can be seen everywhere in daily necessities and clothing. Among them, pillow top embroidery is the most wonderful. The pillow top with many patterns, which represents good luck and auspiciousness, is the best gift for mother-in-law, sister-in-law and sister-in-law after marriage.
