"Crying for marriage" is a ritual and traditional custom of girls in southern Shaanxi when they get married. The content of "crying" can be divided into three types. The first is "crying for siblings", which is performed on the night before the wedding day or before the wedding party arrives. "Crying" for parents, then "crying" for brothers and sisters, through "crying", narrating the gratitude for parents' upbringing, expressing the brotherhood of brothers and sisters that is hard to give up; asking brothers and sisters-in-law to respect their elderly parents and take good care of their younger brothers and sisters, etc. For example, "crying for brothers and sisters-in-law": crying for brother and sister-in-law, it is hard to give up flesh and blood brothers and sisters; brothers and sisters-in-law treat sisters well, and worry and work hard for sisters; this great kindness is not repaid by the younger sister, and I have to ask the two older brothers and sisters to be filial to my parents for my younger sister. The second is "crying" for hundreds of guests. Two days before the girl's wedding, relatives and friends will send items (such as quilts, sheets, clothes, shoes, etc.), and the people call it "adding boxes", and the bride will "cry" for each person. The third is "crying for the bride" (also called "crying for enemies"). This is performed after the bride's arrival, and it is also the end of "crying for marriage". It is sung with the opposite meanings of "crying", "laughing" and "sarcasm", such as "crying for Hongye and Yali": "The bride's arrival is really early, and the crows and magpies on the tree have not returned to their nests yet." "Mr. Yali is like a cow, walking slowly. I want to feed you a handful of grass, but I'm afraid you will be greedy and miss the time." "Hongye is a string that eats both ends, and enemies will meet again." It is said that this kind of "crying and scolding" is a welcome and thanks to the bride's arrival.
