Huxian folk fabric tiger
The folk cloth tiger in Huxian County is an ancient local needlework craft. It is associated with the myths about tigers, the concept of tiger worship and the ancient folk customs of the full moon, and has a very ancient historical origin. The tiger is a symbol of health and disaster prevention. People use "tiger head and tiger brain" and "lively and vigorous" to describe the body's strength. Therefore, the existence of the local cloth tiger making skills has a deep folk basis. The traditional making techniques of Huxian cloth tigers include cutting, sewing, tying, embroidering, gluing, pasting, and painting. The first step is to cut out cloth samples of different sizes, such as ears and stomachs; the second step is to sew the front of the cloth (leave a long mouth), then turn the cloth to the front, add fluffy cotton, and sew the opening; finally, decorate the face of the cloth tiger, sew on the eyes and nose, make a beard with wool, and sew the ears to the head. The materials and craftsmanship of Huxian folk cloth tigers are also different. The most common ones are sewn with cotton cloth and silk, filled with sawdust, chaff, cotton or vanilla, and painted, embroidered, cut and pasted, and patched to depict the tiger's facial features and patterns. There are many types of Huxian folk cloth tigers, and the forms are very rich, including tiger pillows, tiger hats, tiger shoes, tiger sleeves (commonly known as: turtle covers), etc. The shape of a big head, big eyes, big mouth, and big tail highlights the brave demeanor. The tiger's head and facial features show innocence and childishness, revealing the cute and naive state of a child. The shape of Huxian cloth tigers is ever-changing. The naive, simple, bold imagination and exaggeration form the overall characteristics of Huxian cloth tigers, which are "mighty and docile, spirited and beautiful". This tiger image greatly shrinks the tiger's body and tail, and the limbs are also shortened. However, the main characteristics of the tiger are not ignored at all, and the tiger's head is more deliberately portrayed. Its big round eyes and grinning mouth are very exaggerated. The Huxian cloth tiger blends the real tiger with the idealized tiger in fantasy. It has human personality and human emotions. It is not similar in appearance, but similar in spirit. Therefore, it is particularly cute and charming. The Huxian cloth tiger has a high practical value. For example, the cloth tiger pillow is not only beautiful and children like it, but also can be used as a pillow, or as a decoration for children to accompany and "give courage", and decorate the space; the tiger head hat can "ward off evil spirits" and keep warm; the tiger head cotton shoes are very practical and very beautiful. Due to the changes of the times, people's lifestyles and concepts have undergone tremendous changes. The folk cultural space on which the cloth tiger depends for survival is disappearing. The precious cultural heritage of the cloth tiger is difficult to pass on, and rescue and protection are imminent. In 2013, the Huxian folk cloth tiger was included in the fourth batch of intangible cultural heritage list of Shaanxi Province, providing new opportunities for the inheritance and development of this folk art.
