It is a specialty of Haicheng, Anshan, Liaoning. Haicheng shadow play is commonly known as donkey skin shadow play. It is a drama in which the characters are carved out of donkey skin and illuminated with lights to show the plot. Shadow artists sing and manipulate while accompanied by music. It was deeply loved by the people of Haicheng in a certain historical period in the past. Haicheng shadow play belongs to the shadow tune of Luanzhou, Hebei. It was introduced to Niuzhuang, Haicheng during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. During the Daoguang period, the performances of shadow play artists such as Wu Laoxiu were very active. His disciples were active in Dashiqiao, Gaixian and Fuxian, forming the Liaonan shadow play. In the early years of the Republic of China, Wu Zhidian from Shanxi came to Yantai Village, Nantai, Haicheng, and taught Liu Yuanbang, Su Letian and six others to sing shadow play, known as the "Six Generals". They developed the Shanxi sheepskin play with the Luanzhou shadow play and created the Haicheng shadow play. The unique singing style is derived from the banqiang music. It has a complete board style, including original board, fast board, and belt board. The roles of Haicheng shadow play are divided into Sheng, Dan, Jing and Chou. The script for the performance is called "shadow scroll". Each shadow scroll has about six to ten volumes, and one volume can be sung in each show. In addition to singing, the actors participating in the performance must also have one person holding the shadow, one person receiving the shadow, one person playing the drum, one person playing the main string, two people playing the string, and one person playing the hand gong in the middle building. This is the entire troupe. Its singing method is similar to that of Peking Opera, and all male actors sing the drama in small voices. The accompanying instruments include Sihu, Banhu, Sanxian, and percussion instruments. Generally, a troupe of five to six people performs in villages. Haicheng shadow play has a long history. It is mostly based on historical themes, showing the joys and sorrows of emperors, generals, talented men and beautiful women. The stories are vivid and the plots are tortuous. In addition, the image of the characters' performances and the beautiful and pleasant music have won the love of the general public and have important historical and cultural value. At the same time, it has played a role in propaganda and education in spreading cultural knowledge, preserving and inheriting valuable folk historical legends, local customs and customs. In 2006, Haicheng shadow play was approved by the provincial government as the first batch of intangible cultural heritage masterpieces of Liaoning Province.
