"Zhongxing Shadow Play" is an important part of Huaibei Shadow Play. It is a form of folk opera performance, which uses light to illuminate silhouettes of cowhide or donkey skin. In March 2014, "Zhongxing Shadow Play" was included in the third batch of municipal intangible cultural heritage projects by the People's Government of Bengbu City. Zhongxing Township has a long history. It is said to be the fief of the prime minister in the Han Dynasty. It has been a gathering place for commerce since ancient times. Zhongxing is also the homonym of "Zhongxing", which means "all surnames". It is a place where people with different surnames live and has a strong cultural atmosphere. "Zhongxing Shadow Play" is a folk art form among many local cultural arts. It has been popular since the Ming and Qing Dynasties and has a history of hundreds of years. "Zhongxing Shadow Play" is similar to other shadow plays. They all use light to illuminate figures, animals and other silhouettes made of cowhide or donkey skin for performance. There must be at least three people performing, including old male actors, young male actors, and folk tunes, also known as "nine tunes and eighteen tunes". One of them is responsible for playing instruments and singing, another is responsible for selecting characters and singing, and another is ready to set off gunfire for fighting scenes and repair damaged shadow puppets, and sometimes sings. The performance is lively and the shadow puppet performance is vivid, making people feel immersive and deeply loved by the people. (Source: Guzhen County Cultural Center)
