Heishan County, Jinzhou City, is located at the throat of the Liaoxi Corridor. Since ancient times, it has been a place where merchants have gathered and the economy has been prosperous. Many folk artists from the surrounding areas and even inside and outside the pass make a living by performing here. At the same time, many folk arts are integrated here. Heishan shadow play is developed on the basis of absorbing the shadow play skills of Leting, Hebei, and combining it with the local shadow play singing style. It is a branch of shadow play in northern China. It has been passed down for more than 200 years and is mainly distributed in Wangdianzi Village, Jiangtun Town, Heishan County and Xiaohuang Village, Hujia Town. There are three branches and five generations of descendants of Heishan shadow play. The third-generation descendant Ma Shengshan is now 88 years old. He started learning at the age of 13 and specialized in Xiaosheng. He learned to perform many repertoires and was also proficient in shadow play instrument accompaniment. He taught two generations of apprentices, a total of 12 people. There were 5 early Heishan shadow play classes with about 40 actors. In the 1970s, the Heishan shadow play troupe performed in cities and towns, and performed as far as Mohe, Heilongjiang, Dehui, Jilin and other places. At that time, watching shadow puppetry was a popular form of cultural entertainment for urban and rural residents. The shapes and production of characters and scenes in shadow puppetry are exquisite. The main props of Heishan shadow puppetry are: shadow figures, shadow screens, shadow scrolls, shadow boxes and accompanying musical instruments. The production of shadow figures is generally to process animal skins (mostly donkey skins) into translucent thin skins, and then carve and paint them. The carving and painting process is complicated and the shapes are vivid. The shadow screen is also called "shadow window". The early shadow screens were 3 feet high and 5 feet wide, and later developed to 4 feet high and 6 feet wide. White paper is used as the curtain. In the early days, oil lamps were used for lighting. Later, white cloth was used as the curtain and electric lights were used for lighting. The shadow scroll is actually the script. There are dozens of shadow scrolls in Heishan shadow puppetry. The main repertoires include "Five Fenghui", "Water Buffalo Formation", "Second Plum Blossom", "Journey to the West", "Investiture of the Gods", "Yang Jiajiang", etc. The shadow box is a box for holding shadow figures, shadow screens, shadow scrolls and musical instruments. The accompaniment instruments of Heishan Shadow Play mainly include four-stringed instruments, gongs and drums, suona, etc. In order to adapt to the performance form of shadow play, Heishan Shadow Play adopts a combination of abstract and realistic techniques, and boldly artistically, 1-dimensionally, and theatrically comprehensive treatment of characters and scenes. There are two main manipulators of Heishan Shadow Play, namely "upper line" and "lower line". There are three poles that control the movements of the shadow people, one of which is called "main pole" and the other two are called "hand poles". There are usually five types of division of labor: holding, sticking, hitting, pulling, and singing. The roles of shadow play are divided into: Sheng, Xiao, Da, Ran, and Chou. Sheng is Xiaosheng; Xiao is Danjiao; Da is Banhuxu; Ran is three strands of beard; Chou is Choujiao. Heishan Shadow Play is known for its singing skills and unique style. It is based on the Northeast dialect and is a Banqiang body. The singing rhythms include "seven-character sentence", "cross brocade", "three chasing seven", "five-character fu", etc. These lyrics are based on the basic structural unit of the upper and lower sentences of the couplet, and each paragraph of lyrics is generally composed of several pairs of upper and lower sentences with the same rhyme. Its basic board styles include Daban, Erban, Sanban, Kuaiban, and various tunes such as desolate tune, sad tune, Huanyang tune, and "Sanganqi" tune named after the special sentence pattern. Heishan shadow play has high artistic and aesthetic value, showing unique regional, national and aesthetic orientation, and is a treasure of the folk culture of the motherland. Heishan shadow play has been included in the second batch of provincial intangible cultural heritage list, and has been recommended by the Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Expert Committee to apply for the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list. The reporter learned in the interview that now, the fifth generation of Heishan shadow play inheritors are all over 50 years old, and the inheritance of shadow play is facing the situation of no successor. If rescue excavation and sorting are not carried out in time, it will soon face the situation of being lost. Therefore, Jinzhou City actively supports the shadow play troupe to resume performances and organizes actors to perform in towns, schools and cultural squares. At the same time, living allowances are given to old shadow puppet artists, and certain financial support is given to the inheritance activities of inheritors, so as to attract the younger generation of shadow puppet enthusiasts to learn shadow puppet skills. Jinzhou City has also formulated a five-year protection plan for Heishan Shadow Puppetry. This year, based on the excavation, sorting, and filing of last year, it began to record shadow puppetry audio and video albums, establish resource libraries and shadow puppetry websites; next year, an exhibition of achievements will be held and academic seminars will be held; in 2010, a professional Heishan Shadow Puppetry troupe will be established to expand the performance market; in 2011, shadow puppetry classes will be held regularly to train a large number of professional shadow puppetry actors, pass on Heishan Shadow Puppetry, and make it shine charmingly in the Chinese shadow puppetry family.
