Dong costumes are varied and rich in styles. Dong people usually wear casual clothes, but dress up for festivals and celebrations. According to the characteristics of Dong women's clothing, Dong costumes can be divided into tight skirts, loose skirts and pants. Dong women's headdresses are long flowing hair tied with red hair strings, coiled on the head, and then wrapped with black gauze scarves. Silver hairpins, silver combs and other silver ornaments are pinned behind the head, and then decorated with silver plate flowers, silver crowns and other headdresses. Dong men's clothing looks simple and generous. They wrap their heads with green cloth; wear a stand-up collar and a double-breasted top on the upper body, a buttonless short waistcoat on the outside, and embroidery on the lapels; tie a traditional Dong belt around the waist; wear long trousers, leggings, straw sandals or go barefoot. The history of Dong clothing can be traced back to the Han and Tang Dynasties more than 2,000 years ago. The "Biography of Liao in the Northern History" of the Tang Dynasty recorded that "Liao people can make fine cloth with bright colors". In the Ming Dynasty, the clothing skills of the Dong people were greatly developed. Dong brocade is famous for its exquisite composition, symmetrical layout, diverse patterns, elegant colors, exquisite craftsmanship and excellent quality. In the "Guizhou Records" by Guo Zizhang of the Ming Dynasty, it was praised that "the Dong women have beautiful skin and are good at embroidering brocade". In the Qing Dynasty, the craftsmanship of Dong brocade was well-known far and wide, among which the Dong brocade produced in Liping, Guizhou was the best. Kangxi's "Liping Bamboo Branch Poems" praised that "Dong brocade boasts that it is produced in ancient states". Jiaqing's "Guizhou Records" recorded: "Liping Dong brocade is the best in other counties. It is not damaged by frozen water and is not stained by oil." "Liuzhou Prefecture Records" said that the Dong people "wear flowers and birds sing". Dong costumes are traditional costumes of the Dong people, which are distributed in Rongjiang, Liping, Congjiang, Jinping, Tianzhu, Sansui, Jianhe, Zhenyuan and other counties in Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province. Dong costumes are the representative of the materialized form of Dong culture, fully reflecting the values of the Dong people, and are an important part of promoting and inheriting the art and culture of the Chinese nation. At the same time, they also have far-reaching and important practical significance for promoting Chinese traditional culture and art education. The craftsmanship of Dong costumes is passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth, father-to-son, mother-to-daughter, and master-to-apprentice. Now, with the rapid development of the economy and society, the protection and inheritance of Dong costumes and handicrafts are facing a huge crisis. Usually, Dong men, women, old and young rarely wear Dong costumes, and only wear them during major festivals or important ceremonies; the production process of costumes is complex and complicated. It takes a short period of several months or a long period of two to three years to make a set of Dong costumes, and the progress is slow. On November 11, 2014, Dong ethnic costumes were approved by the State Council of the People's Republic of China to be included in the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
