Putian clay sculptures are mainly distributed in Huangshi Town, Putian City. They originated in the period of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. In the second year of Yongding in the Han Dynasty (558), with the construction of Jinxian Temple (later renamed Jinxian Temple and Guanghua Temple), the art of clay sculpture of Bodhisattva was introduced to Huangshi, Putian. After the development in the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, the clay sculpture skills of Huangshi clay sculpture masters became famous. Temples, Taoist temples and ancestral halls inside and outside Putian all chose "Huangshi workers" as their first choice for statues. After the founding of New China, Putian's clay sculpture art developed along with the spread of religious and folk culture. Putian's traditional clay sculpture skills have been well inherited, and its representative inheritors include Wu Wenzhong and others. Clay sculpture is the oldest traditional folk sculpture craft in Putian. With the changes in the materials of statues, wood carving, stone carving, bronze carving and other types have emerged; but no matter what kind of material is used to make large statues, clay sculptures must be used as the base sample (also called "small draft"), so clay sculptures are the mother of other sculpture varieties, which shows its important value. The shapes and expressions of Putian clay sculptures are very vivid and lifelike, with strong artistic charm. So far, a large number of Song Dynasty Buddhist statues and gods have been preserved in various places in Putian, such as the statues of Huangshi Gucheng Palace, Meifei Palace, and Chongxing Temple, all of which prove the superb skills of the clay sculptures. The lines of the clay sculptures are comfortable, soft, vigorous and stable, and the shapes are symmetrical and vivid. Guanyin smiles with flowers, King Kong glares, Bodhidharma meditates facing the wall, and Maitreya smiles at the world. They are not only perfectly in line with the spirit of religion, but also a profound understanding of Zen. With compassionate feelings and ingenuity, every detail shows artistic perception and creation, becoming an important artistic carrier for spreading religious culture. Putian 1 Clay sculpture skills involve many fields such as technology, history, religion, and folklore. It can give different clay sculptures different artistic representations, has high artistic value, and is also an important physical material for studying history, folklore, and religion.
