Zhujing Lantern Festival, also known as Lotus Lantern Festival, commonly known as "City God Festival", originated in the Southern and Northern Dynasties and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It is a traditional folk cultural activity of the people in the southwest of Shanghai to celebrate festivals, thank gods and entertain people, with lantern displays, folk performances, folk play, and commercial activities as carriers, containing many cultural contents such as history, folklore, art, religion, and commerce. This custom embodies the worship of gods and Bodhisattvas. The main purpose of expression is to offer sacrifices and pray for peace and prosperity in the country, good weather, good harvests, elimination of disasters and evil, and prosperity of the population. The time of the lantern festival is generally around the Lantern Festival (Shangyuan Festival), Zhongyuan Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival (Xiayuan Festival) and various festivals. It is also held during major local celebrations. Zhujing Lantern Festival had already taken shape as early as the Tang Dynasty, and integrated music and dance, acrobatics, and folk art to become a comprehensive folk activity. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the Lantern Festival also integrated local handicrafts display, folk field song performances, folk artists' juggling, etc., and became a large-scale mass activity. In addition, there are many temples in Zhujing area, and the incense is strong. Whether it is the City God Incense Market or the Temple Fair, there are lanterns to add to the fun, which is the icing on the cake. Its grand occasion can be called the crown of Jiangnan, and it enjoys the reputation of "Zhujing Lanterns are the best in the world". During the Lantern Festival, there have always been tourists like a sea, thousands of lanterns are lit, and the scene is lively. It has become a grand ceremony in the Jiangnan water town. Therefore, there was a proverb at that time: "Don't forget the Zhujing City God Competition when you are busy." The development of the Zhujing Lantern Festival, from a single lantern festival activity to today's influential folk festival in Jinshan and even the surrounding areas, is closely related to the local people's thoughts, feelings, and living customs.
