Ningxiang shadow puppetry usually consists of a performance team of 3 to 4 people. The shadow shape is made of cowhide, and the light source is vegetable oil or kerosene. During the performance, the artist operates the shadow shape, which is called "dingzuo" or "dingtiaozi". The rest of the performances include civil and military scenes, singing Hunan opera or flower drum opera. Most of the performances are to repay gods, fulfill vows or celebrate birthdays. The popularity of shadow puppetry in Ningxiang can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty. On the basis of inheriting the traditional shadow transmission techniques, Ningxiang shadow puppetry has continuously enriched its content, changed the expression and performance methods of shadow puppetry transmission, and has formed the characteristics of Ningxiang. There are traditional programs such as "Baotai Mountain", "Eight Hundred Autumns", "Xue Rengui's Expedition to the East", "Building Beams", "Double Dragon Set", "Blessing", "Golden Bridge Fortune Telling", "Hong Langgui Drinking Wine", and "Zhang Gong Bai Ren".
