Shayang shadow puppetry refers to puppetry popular in Shayang County and surrounding areas. According to historical records, shadow puppetry flourished in the Han Dynasty and originated from the Chu Dynasty, and has undergone more than 2,000 years of evolution and inheritance. According to the "Jingmen City Chronicles", there were more than 230 folk shadow puppetry plays in Shayang at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and more than 2,000 traditional plays left by artists of all generations. The core area of Shayang shadow puppetry is in Maoli Town, Gaoyang Town, Guandang Town and Zengji Town, represented by Zhao Yuelong, Sun Zhonghou, etc. The singing style is mainly song style and Tongzi style (fisher drum), radiating to neighboring Qianjiang, Tianmen, Jingshan, Zhongxiang, Jingzhou and other places. Shayang shadow puppetry is now on the list of provincial intangible cultural heritage of Hubei Province.
