Taoyuan shadow play is a traditional drama project in the third batch of representative projects of Xuzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. Taoyuan shadow play has a history of more than 2,000 years since it was recorded in writing. During the Qing Dynasty, Shen Guixiang's father Shen Peigen, a native of Taoyuan Town, Suining, learned the simple acting skills of shadow play in Ma'anshan, Anhui, and passed it on to Shen Guixiang during the Republic of China. In the early days of liberation, the Suining County Cultural Center established a shadow play troupe, which not only toured the county's cities and towns, but also performed in Shandong, Anhui, Henan, and southern Jiangsu. Shadow play is mainly distributed in Taoyuan Town in Suining County. It is quite influential in the neighboring Liji Town and even in nearby Suxian, Lingbi, Dalu, Gaolou and other places in Anhui Province. The performers of shadow play manipulate silhouettes, sing, or accompany music behind the scenes. In the past, when movies, television and other media were not yet developed, shadow play was one of the most popular folk entertainment activities. The performance of shadow play is wonderful and moving, the performance equipment is light, and the singing is rich and beautiful, which can be called a unique Chinese folk art. In the long-term evolution of shadow puppetry music in different regions, the style and rhythm of the music singing have integrated the essence of local folk instrumental music, local opera, folk art, folk songs and other music systems, thus forming many colorful schools with important historical and cultural value. "Shadow puppets" are authentic folk handicrafts, which makes this rich handicraft independent of shadow play and become an independent art form. Exquisitely made "shadow puppets" can be used as handicrafts for people to appreciate, and can be used as indoor decorations to embellish the living space. Bringing handicrafts with a strong local flavor to people working in cities has important economic value. There is a relationship of mutual penetration, interdependence, mutual influence and mutual transformation between folk art and professional creation. The design and production of shadow puppets provide rare materials for art design and a broad display space, which has important aesthetic value.
