Tiger Shoes Making

Zhejiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

"Tiger shoes" are also called "tiger head shoes" and "tiger head shoes". They are named because the toe of the shoe resembles a tiger head. They are handmade craft shoes that combine practicality, artistry and ornamental value. The craft of making "tiger shoes" has been circulated among the people in Cixi as early as the Ming and Qing Dynasties. At that time, the exhaust gas produced by salt production in Dagutang, Cixi led to a bad environment, low fertility rates among women, and frequent premature death of children. The belief of the people in the south was mainly to worship tigers, so the people used salt flower (paper-cut) patterns to make the soles of "tiger shoes" (clip shoes), and the toe of the shoe used tiger head patterns, so that the tiger would bless the children to grow up healthily. It has become a custom for the people to wear "tiger shoes" when a child is born, and this traditional skill has been passed down to this day. However, with the development of the times, children only wear "tiger shoes" when they are full moon to show that they can ward off evil spirits. The market for "tiger shoes" has shrunk. Since the 1960s, there have been fewer and fewer artists making "tiger shoes", and the craft of making "tiger shoes" is also facing extinction. Cixi Gutang Street is rescuing, protecting and passing on the "tiger shoes" craftsmanship, which is still active among the people and represented by Jiang Jianfei (formerly known as Jiang Zhenfen). In recent years, "tiger shoes" have been well protected and attracted many visitors, apprentices and businessmen. Today, "tiger shoes" are well-known, and a "tiger shoes" handicraft studio has been opened. Relying on the teaching of production techniques and media publicity, the popularity of "tiger shoes" has been increased.
