🎧  Listen to Introduction

The production process of Kunming's copper was introduced from Huize, Dongchuan and other places, and it has been more than 300 years. The copper production process is complicated, the cost is high, and the raw materials are scarce. During the Republic of China, artificial copper products appeared. In order to distinguish it from the original copper, people called it "cooked copper". Cooked copper is made through unique smelting and casting. There are more products, but the glossiness is not as good as raw copper. During the Republic of China, the copper produced by Wang Jixing of Kunming Baohonghao was the most famous; the Guan Sheng statues made by Li Changqing of Guanzhuang in the southern suburbs were mostly mixed with red copper, brass, and white copper, with a unique style. Kunming copper production process has many steps, including material selection, impurity removal, raw material, initial splitting, shelling, rising, mouth tightening, forming, grinding, burning spots, stirring spots, boiling spots, exposing spots, and paint protection. Kunming bronze was mainly inherited within the family before, and passed down from father to son, not from daughter to daughter. After the founding of New China, the Yunnan Provincial Handicraft Administration gathered a group of bronze artists to carry out large-scale production. In 1978, the Kunming Arts and Crafts Factory was established, and a bronze workshop was specially set up. In 1980, the bronze workshop was changed to the Kunming Bronze Factory. They improved the craftsmanship and not only produced traditional craft products, but also developed products with modern themes. In terms of modeling, it not only inherited and carried forward the traditional characteristics, but also absorbed the artistic nutrition of the ancient Dian bronze and the Central Plains bronze culture, and combined with modern sculpture techniques and advanced technology, it fully displayed the characteristics of the flower and supplemented it with simple and refined decorative patterns to achieve artistic perfection and unity. Kunming bronze products mainly include practical daily necessities and ornamental crafts, with elegant shapes, unique raw materials, rare and luxurious, and well-known at home and abroad. Now there are a number of representative works such as the Ox-Tiger Case, Peacock Vase, Startled Deer, Elephant, Peacock King, Big Rhinoceros, Incense Burner, etc., which have won the title of Quality Products of the Ministry of Light Industry and the province and city for many times, and have been collected as national treasures and presented as national gifts to foreign heads of state.
