Shuangmiaozhu Silkworm Flower Water Festival
Shuangmiaozhu Silkworm Flower Water Fair refers to the silkworm flower temple fair held in Shuangmiaozhu, Qinghe Village, Zhouquan Town, Tongxiang. Because the temple fair is held on the water, it is called "Silkworm Flower Water Fair" or "Silkworm Flower Holy Fair". According to the "Shimen County Chronicles" of the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, on Qingming Festival, "farmers' boats are equipped with flags, gongs and drums are sounded, and they gather in front of the Dragon Silkworm Temple. This is called the Dragon Silkworm Festival, which also means beating drums to pray for silkworms". The Dragon Silkworm Festival is a silkworm flower festival held in the river port in front of the temple with the Dragon Silkworm Temple in Zhicun as the center, which is also the Shuangmiaozhu Silkworm Flower Holy Fair. Tongxiang has been a silkworm town since ancient times, and silkworm farmers have always had the custom of believing in the silkworm god Ma Mingwang. It is said that the Shuangmiaozhu Silkworm Flower Temple Fair originated in the Southern Song Dynasty. After Song Gaozong established his capital in Lin'an, he named the silkworm god Ma Mingwang "Ma Ming Dashi" to encourage silkworm farmers to plant mulberry trees and raise silkworms. For this reason, three temples, Guihe Temple (now called "Shuangqing Temple"), Zhicun Temple (later renamed "Longcan Temple"), and Fudun Temple, were built in Shuangmiaozhu, Zhicun, and Nansong near Qinghe Village, and a hall was set up in the temple to worship a statue of Ma Mingwang Bodhisattva, known as the "three sisters". In the old days, during the Qingming Festival every year, silkworm farmers near the three temples used farm boats to welcome the three sisters of Ma Mingwang to the river port near Shuangmiaozhu for worship, praying for the silkworm god to bless the silkworm harvest. Since Shuangmiaozhu is located at the intersection of several rivers and ports, water transportation is convenient, so the Silkworm Flower Water Festival is usually held on the river in front of Shuangqing Temple in Qinghe Village, Zhouquan Town, but the silkworm farmers who participated in the main activities are distributed in Wancun, Yima, Qingshi, Yongxiu, -, Zhicun and other places in Tongxiang City. Its audience is distributed throughout the city, and there are even silkworm farmers from Wuxing, Deqing, Yuhang and other places. The Silkworm Flower Water Festival starts from Qingming and usually lasts for five to seven days. Shuangmiaozhu Silkworm Flower Water Fair reflects the unique customs of the silkworm hometown with rich folk culture and art. Its contents include worshipping, sacrificing and entertaining gods. The first day of Qingming Festival is the preparation day for welcoming the fair. People worship the silkworm flower god in the temple, make up for the silkworm god, and prepare the god boat in the harbor in front of the temple. The god boat is a Buddhist boat made of two farm boats. The second day of Qingming Festival begins to welcome the gods. In the morning, the welcoming staff carried the statue of the silkworm god Ma Mingwang wearing a rosy robe and a phoenix crown from the temple to the god boat amid the sound of gongs and drums. Offerings were placed on the god boat, incense was lit and candles were lit. When everything was ready, the god boat left the dock and began to cruise in the harbor. Wherever the god boat went, the silkworm farmers on various boats that came to participate in the welcoming fair all clasped their hands and bowed to show their respect. After the god boat cruised for a distance, it returned to the original place in front of the temple and stopped. Then the boats from various places participating in the temple fair performed programs for the silkworm god to entertain the god and themselves. There were various boats from various places, and the performances were rich and colorful. There are speedboats, incense-worshipping boats, boxing boats, stage boats, dragon lantern boats, and high-pole boats. The stage boats are often the forerunners, which are the basic program of the water temple fairs, and are performed by some boys and girls playing the roles of traditional drama characters. The incense-worshipping boat is a folk dance in the water temple fairs, and eight men and eight women dressed in red and green perform incense-worshipping performances. The boxing boat is a folk sports activity in the water temple fairs, and various folk martial arts are performed. The most eye-catching is the high-pole boat. During the performance, the performers climb up the bamboo poles more than three meters high and perform various thrilling actions on the top of the poles, such as reverse prying, carrying bamboo, lying on bamboo, etc. The finale is often the competitive speedboat, which is participated by many villages and towns. There are thirteen people on each boat, equipped with two oars and eight paddles. During the performance, under the rhythmic command of the conductor, all the boats set off together, chasing each other. Thousands of people on the shore surrounded the river to watch, and the grand occasion was unprecedented. According to the recollections of local elders, the last Silkworm Flower Water Fair before the founding of New China was held during the Qingming Festival in 1948. According to the New Chongde People's Newspaper on March 24, 1948, "On March 20, at the junction of Shuangmiaozhu (also known as "Guihe Temple") in the 14th Bao of this township and Zhicun in the neighboring township, there are always people who initiate and hold large-scale welcoming god competitions with farmers from neighboring townships around the Qingming Festival every year, in order to commemorate the Bodhisattva Ma Mingwang and participate in the competitions to pray for a good harvest of rice, silk and grains. There are dragon boats, incense boats, boxing boats, etc. in the competitions." After the founding of New China, the water temple fair activities stopped. It was not until 1998 that the Shuangmiaozhu Silkworm Flower Water Fair, which had been interrupted for half a century, was restored, and it has been held every Qingming Festival since then. Shuangmiaozhu Silkworm Flower Water Fair has been included in the third batch of Zhejiang Province's intangible cultural heritage list.
