Dacheng Xihe Drum

Hebei
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Xihe Drum was created on the basis of Hebei folk storytelling art and is a famous variety of folk art that is popular in northern China. Dacheng County is located in the source area of this type of music. It is located in the Ziya River Basin. Because the Ziya River was originally named Yanhe, Yanhe, and Xihe, it was named Xihe Drum according to the region. As early as the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, there was Cao Zhankui (from Jiacun, Dacheng County), one of the five Kui of the Qingmen Drum Book. After learning the art, he passed it on to Yang Kuiwen, and then to the "Yong" generation. During the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, after the efforts of several generations of Xihe Drum artists, a new singing style was created, making the tune more mellow and pleasant. Later, Zhao Yongkui, Wang Yongshun, Wu Yongrong and other disciples of the "Yong" generation accepted apprentices to pass on their art, making Qingmen Drum Book artists prosperous in Dacheng and performing in Beijing, Tianjin, Cangzhou, Baoding and other places. In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, Xihe drum entered a prosperous period, and a group of well-known actors emerged in Dacheng County, such as Li Dequan (from Jiugaozhuang), who founded the "Xiaobeikou School" of Xihe drum, later known as the Li School. Li Dequan, a representative of the Li School, became famous for his unique performance. Li Zhen has a big voice, accurate pronunciation, fierce utterance, and solid groove. His singing has obvious turns and large ups and downs. He is good at expressing grief and desolation, and pays more attention to meaning than form. He pays attention to conveying feelings with mouth, eyes, and hands, showing a steady and unrestrained style. Gao, a Xihe artist in the eastern part of the county, tied a "plowshare" to his knees when setting up a stall, hugged a three-stringed instrument, and clamped the drum between his legs. He sang, played, beat, and shook at the same time. One person has three pieces, seamless, exquisite and unique, and people nicknamed him "Gao Sanjian". Xihe drum is rooted in traditional culture and is determined by traditional material civilization and traditional lifestyle. After the establishment of the market economy system, with the acceleration of the process of knowledge and economic globalization, people's traditional culture, traditional consciousness and traditional lifestyle have been impacted. In the modern civilization, young people are unwilling to spend their time on drums that they are not interested in and do not bring any benefits, which seriously hinders the inheritance of the art.
