Xiushui Festival Customs
1. On the morning of the first day of the traditional festival, every household fires cannons to open the door of wealth (front door), and people go out in the direction of the year. Neighbors wish each other a happy new year, first the elders and then the peers. Most people eat vegetarian breakfast, mainly vegetables and tofu. As the saying goes: "Eat vegetables, and you will be clean and peaceful." On this day, it is forbidden to splash water outside, sweep the floor, move the shoulder pole or hoe, dry clothes, or say unlucky words. In the following days, people pay New Year's greetings. As the saying goes: "On the first day, pay New Year's greetings to the grandfather, on the second day, pay New Year's greetings to the grandmother (grandmother), on the third and fourth days, pay New Year's greetings to the daughter (relative)." Generally, they wish each other well. The elderly wish them "longevity", the businessmen wish them "wealth from all directions", and the young people wish them "prosperity and fame". Administrative and enterprise units, mass organizations have holidays during the Spring Festival, and lights and decorations are hung at the door. The custom of unit group greetings is gradually gaining popularity. From the fourth to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, rural neighbors have the custom of eating "saw rice" and entertaining each other to celebrate the New Year. At night, people like to play with dragon lanterns, lion lanterns, boat lanterns, clamshell lanterns, and running lanterns, and beat gongs and drums, and firecrackers are set off all over the sky, which is very lively. The Lantern Festival is also known as the Shangyuan Festival and the Lantern Festival. On this day, people eat Lantern fruit. It is said that "after eating Lantern fruit, everyone looks for a living; after eating Lantern cake, they prepare to plant crops." After the Lantern Festival, farmhands have to go to work and shops have to open. There is a custom of stealing greens at night on the Lantern Festival. It will cause people to scold you, and it is said that the more you scold, the healthier you will be. In the new society, this custom has been abolished. However, people send lanterns to graves, clean chicken manure, and fumigate urine barrels. At night, lights are on everywhere, and even cow pens, pig pens, kitchens, etc. are lit with clear oil lamps or red candles. The customs of eating green vegetables and Lantern fruit are still followed. The Flower Festival is on the 15th day of the second lunar month. Most girls pierce their ears and wear rings on this day. At night, women sit around and drink tea to celebrate the festival. After liberation, women no longer pierce their ears and wear rings, and this festival is also little known. Qingming Festival is a traditional Chinese festival. It lasts for 3 days before and after Qingming Festival, plus Qingming Day, a total of 7 days. The mountain gods don't care about things, so people mostly sweep tombs and worship their ancestors during these days. At that time, people go to the base to clean ditches and add soil and hold memorial services, commonly known as "hanging mountains". People from all walks of life in government agencies, schools, etc. often lay wreaths at the martyrs' tombs to commemorate the martyrs and educate young people on revolutionary traditions. The Beginning of Summer Festival is also known as the "Agricultural Festival" among the people. At this time, rural production is entering a busy stage. On this day, the people set up banquets. The wine and food do not require richness, but they must be large in quantity. The dishes are mainly rice crackers, tofu, and meat. You must eat enough to strengthen your body, so it is also called "supporting the summer." This custom is still popular today. The Dragon Separation Festival The first day after the summer solstice is the Dragon Separation Day. Superstition believes that rain is controlled by dragons, and the amount of rainfall is closely related to the dragon's diligence. Dragons love cleanliness the most, so on the Dragon Separation Day, it is strictly forbidden to carry feces and urine. In the old days, many places rang gongs to show the public and inform the neighbors. The Dragon Boat Festival on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month is commonly known as the "Chang Festival." The people of Xikou follow the customs of Chu. The fifth and fifteenth days of the first lunar month are the Big and Small Acorus Festival. On the Acorus Festival, calamus and mugwort are inserted on both sides of the door, and wine is sprinkled around the house, and the prayer is made while sprinkling; "On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the Dragon Boat Festival, all kinds of insects and ants are eliminated." In Sandu and other places, sesame seeds are fried and burned, and the sesame stalks are used for the sound of patting. While frying, the prayer is made: "Pip pat pat, there is only one flea and mosquito." On this day, steamed buns, rice dumplings, eggs, and noodles are the main foods, and relatives and friends give each other gifts before the festival. Garlic is also eaten. There is a saying that "If you eat garlic in the first day of May, ghosts will run around in front of the door." It is forbidden to sit on the doorstep barefoot. According to old records, there is a pond in Taoli that is several dozen feet wide and unfathomable. In the Tang Dynasty, monks played boat racing there every year during the Dragon Boat Festival. During the Republic of China period, the county town, Sandu, Zhajin, and Shankou also raced dragon boats. Later, due to the silting of the riverbed, the races became less frequent, and only Sandu still had this custom. Lotus Viewing Festival It is said that the sixth day of the sixth lunar month is the birthday of the lotus, and the villagers watch the lotus on this day, so it is named the Lotus Viewing Festival. Some literati and scholars admire the moon and recite poems on this night. The Double Ninth Festival is also called "Climbing Festival". The custom of climbing heights in Xiushui has a long history. In the Song Dynasty, Yu Shuang built a pavilion on a mountain in Xia Nanping, the 11th Du of Anxiang (now Nanping Village, Huangshagang), which was used for climbing and viewing on the Double Ninth Festival. This mountain was named Denggao Mountain. A guest wrote: "Dogwood wine, parrot cup, lingering on this day for a hundred years, following the bright moon down the mountain, still with yellow flowers on the cheeks." The ruins still exist today. On the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, there is a custom of sweeping the house in rural areas. It is said that the Kitchen God writes down the bad things that happened to the whole family in the past year on the wall. On the evening of the 24th day, the God of Cooking will report this to the Jade Emperor. Therefore, the house must be swept in advance. The 24th day is the Minor New Year. The time of celebrating the Big New Year varies. The Hakka people celebrate it on the last day of the year, while the locals celebrate it on the last two days of the year. They burn firewood for the New Year, distribute lucky money and close the door to wealth. In the old days, Donggao and other places received the Bodhisattva case on New Year's Eve and played with lanterns in the New Year, which was very grand. Thousands of people went to the Leng Clan Ancestral Hall to invite the Yi Niang Bodhisattva to supervise the lanterns. Gongs and drums sounded, and firecrackers were set off. Before the New Year, relatives and friends gave each other gifts, which was called New Year gifts. From the Little New Year to the Big New Year, it was the time to settle accounts for the year. Private loans and the wages of craftsmen were mostly settled at this time. In the old days, the rich collected rent and forced debts at this time. Those who had no money to repay their debts went out to avoid debtors, which was called "being an emperor". They returned on the first day of the first lunar month, and the creditors could not collect debts in the first month of the new year.
