In the middle of the Qing Dynasty, local merchants in Yuepu carried their goods and walked through the alleys of the village, shouting and beating the small drums in their hands, making loud sounds to attract customers to go out shopping. It is said that the small drums these vendors beat are similar to the "flower-scented drums" in southern Jiangsu. The diameter of the drumhead is about 25 cm, the thickness is about 3.5 cm, and it is covered with skin on one side. The volume is small, but the tone is crisp and very distinctive. Later, local folk artists played the peddler's small drum as a musical instrument in Jiangnan Sizhu, but it only played a decorative role. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, in order to participate in temple fairs, lantern festivals and other celebrations, local drummers expanded the shape of the peddler's small drum to 33 cm in diameter and 7.7 cm in thickness. Both sides were covered with skin, and a drum stand was also made. In this way, the volume was greatly increased, the tone was also thicker, and it was more suitable for outdoor performances. After a long period of evolution and the creation of several generations of folk artists, the performance form has also been relatively finalized. Usually, there are eight small drums standing symmetrically on both sides. The performance often uses the method of "playing in pairs". In order to add color, they also tie colorful silk embroidered with the images of the Eight Immortals, such as Zhang Guolao, Han Zhongli, Lan Caihe, and Tieguai Li, on the edges of the eight small drums. This is the "Eight Immortals Paired Drums" (also known as "Eight Immortals Paired Drums" and "Eight Beats Paired Drums") popular in Yuepu Town, Luodian, Luonan, and Jiangwan in Baoshan District, Shanghai. The name "Eight Immortals Paired Drums" is named after the colorful silk on the edges of the eight drums in the performance form. In order to enrich the expressiveness of the Eight Immortals Paired Drums, they often add small percussion instruments such as wooden fish, small gongs, and small bowls, which become the form of "thin gongs and drums" or "clear gongs and drums" in Shanghai's small gongs and drums. On particularly grand occasions, they also add suona, flute, and stringed instruments to form a form of wind and percussion music or folk music ensemble. Every year, the temple fair on March 28, the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month, and the dragon boat race on the Dragon Boat Festival in May, musicians from all over the country gather together to play drums and compete with each other, which has become the most attractive program for tourists. Whenever there is a wedding celebration in a neighboring farm, rural musicians will also go to play and add to the fun. When the "Eight Immortals Drumming" was popular, there were 15 drum teams in Yuepu area alone. The most famous one was Sun Xinfu (a scholar) father in Meiyuan Youchezhaibei. Because of his outstanding drumming skills, he was given a drum by the county in the early years of the Republic of China as an encouragement. The tunes they often play include: "Liu Yaojin", "Five Plum Blossoms", "Xiao Kaimen", "Putianle", etc. Since the reform and opening up, with the construction of Baosteel, metallurgical construction units from all over the country have gathered in Baoshan, Shanghai, so that Shanxi's majestic gongs and drums, Taiyuan gongs and drums, Sichuan's New Year's gongs and drums, and Zhejiang East gongs and drums and other excellent drums have been brought to Yuepu area. This has led to a qualitative change in the traditional performance form of "Eight Immortals Duel". After continuous innovation and exploration, a new type of "Yuepu Gong and Drum" was finally formed on the basis of the original "Eight Immortals Duel". The main differences between the two are: (1) The orchestra has been expanded. The addition of big drums, ribs, ten-sided gongs, and bronze percussion instruments has greatly enhanced the momentum and made the expression more rich; (2) A number of excellent repertoires have been created. For example, "Fenjin Drum Classics", "Annual Meeting", and "The Soul of the Ancient Fort" have all won awards in municipal art competitions. (3) Going to the stage. The square art has been staged. For example, the newly created percussion music "Bo" was performed in the Shanghai Concert Hall and won the Outstanding Achievement Award with the highest score at the 1989 Shanghai Cultural and Art Festival. Professor Zhang Dunzhi, then Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Musicians Association and Vice President of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, commented that the song was "innovative, powerful, and wonderful". At the 1991 Shanghai Spring Festival Gala, the former President of the People's Republic of China and the then Shanghai leaders Comrades 1, 1, and 1 watched the performance of the percussion music "Bo" and took photos together. At present, there are 18 gong and drum teams in Yuepu area, with more than 1,000 performers, including workers, farmers, soldiers, students, etc. The most famous group is the Shanghai Baosteel Metallurgical Construction Company Workers' Drum Band. They have won many awards in provincial and municipal art competitions and participated in the China Shanghai Baoshan Folk Art Troupe's visit to France and Brazil in 1996, and were warmly welcomed. With the strong support of the town government, Yuepu Town built the first township gong and drum exhibition hall in the country. Drum culture has become a beautiful landscape in the steel city Yuepu.
