Wuxiang Drum Book, also known as Drum Song and Wuxiang Tune, originated in Wuxiang and became popular in Shangdang. It evolved from the Song and Jin Dynasties Drum Song. In the early years of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty, blind artists in Wuxiang established the "Three Emperors Association" to teach the art of drum book. Later, it was passed down from generation to generation, and the tunes were constantly enriched and reformed. The early singing form of Wuxiang Drum Book was to put a low wooden frame book drum on the table, the singer played the board and drum keys, and the other played the old Hu or Erhu for accompaniment. During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, blind artists absorbed local folk songs and Taoist begging tunes, enriched the original tunes, and enriched the expressiveness of singing. During the Xianfeng period, blind artists also absorbed the characteristics of local operas such as Shangdang Bangzi and Shangdang Luozi, and the singing style, tunes and board styles developed greatly. In the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, the blind artist Duan Xiaowu added the starting board, two sexes, stacking boards, and cutting boards, and transformed the grab board into tight grab board and slow grab board, making the form of Drum Song richer and more complete. Later, someone created the "transfer board" that turns the drum lyrics into opera. In addition to the original book drum and book board, the percussion accompaniment added big gongs, big hairpins, boring gongs, small Zheng, bangzi, etc., but they were all operated by one person, using both hands and feet. The whole set of gongs and drums had a tight rhythm, strict size, and a prosperous atmosphere. So far, the singing style and board style of the drum lyrics have been basically finalized. The singing style of Wuxiang drum book belongs to the board style variation structure, with two tunes, drum lyrics and willow tune, which are generally used alternately, and sometimes only one of them is used. The main board style of the drum lyrics singing style is the big board, and there are also qiangban, sanban, kuban, etc. Wuxiang drum book is mainly sung in a sitting position. When singing a long book, many people play the main characters in it, and express the plot and portray the characters in the form of solo, duet, and chorus. The singers play the instrument accompaniment separately, and the string music includes four major pieces: jinghu, erba, huhu, and yueqin. When there are more people, you can add sanxian, erhu, zhonghu, etc. Wuxiang drum books have a rich traditional bibliography, including more than 30 long books such as "The Story of Five Women Who Brought Back the Tang Dynasty" and "The Story of the Golden Whip"; more than 40 medium-length books such as "Yang Qilang Fighting in a Competition" and "Gao Wenju Staying in the Flower Pavilion"; more than 80 short stories such as "The Second Sister's Dream", "The Young Couple Fighting for the Lantern", "The Poor Man's New Year", and "The Mystery of the Imperial Calendar".
