Datong City is located in the northern part of Shanxi Province and is one of the national production areas of folk copperware. The production skills of Datong copperware began in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty. The bronze casting technology had reached a relatively high level in the Northern Wei Dynasty. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Datong copperware had occupied a large share of the national market, forming a street of nearly 100 coppersmiths with unique skills. Datong copperware has a wide variety of types, including 8 series and more than 300 varieties such as imperial pots, craft hot pots, four treasures of the study, wine and tea sets. During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, there was a slang saying "Watch the scenery on Mount Wutai and buy copper in Datong City" (copper specifically refers to the copper hot pot produced at that time). Datong copperware is a traditional handicraft of the Han nationality with a long history and exquisite craftsmanship. As early as the Northern Wei Dynasty, it enjoyed a great reputation. Since the Tang and Song Dynasties, Datong copperware has been sold well throughout the country. To this day, the folk saying "Watch the Buddha scenery on Mount Wutai and buy copperware in Datong City" is still circulated. During the Northern Wei Dynasty, Datong had a bronze statue of Sakyamuni Buddha. In the Liao Dynasty, military craftsmen in Xijing (now Datong City) were able to make cannons, and other weapons. In the early Yuan Dynasty, there were as many as 760 copper smelters in Datong. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, copperware was deeply integrated into every aspect of life at that time. Weapons, containers, production tools, daily necessities, and decorations were all available. Datong Yuanxiang was called "Coppersmith Street". There were dozens of coppersmith shops on the 100-meter-long street, gathering hundreds of skilled craftsmen. Datong copper hot pot is a representative work of Datong copperware. It consists of six parts: chassis, pot body, fire seat, copper cover, fire tube and small cover. On the chassis, pot body, pot cover and small cover, there are patterns such as "dragon and phoenix presenting auspiciousness", "magpie climbing plum", "eight immortals crossing the sea", "flowers, birds and mountains and rivers". Its production process includes molding, casting, welding, tinning, engraving, polishing, assembly, etc. It has beautiful shape, exquisite craftsmanship, durability, strong national and local characteristics, and is deeply loved by customers. In 1973, when Premier Zhou Enlai accompanied French President Pompidou to visit Datong, he presented a copper hot pot with the pattern of "Nine Dragons Flying to the Moon" as a gift to President Pompidou. On November 11, 2014, the copperware making technique (Datong copperware making technique) was approved by the State Council to be included in the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage list, project number -222
