Yu Tianchengtang was founded in 1782 (the 47th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty), with a history of 227 years. It can be said to be the earliest Chinese time-honored pharmacy built in Shanghai. The founder, Yu Youyuan, was from Ningbo, Zhejiang. Yu Yuangong took the Yu family name as his surname, and named the store Yu Tiancheng with the meaning of "longevity and virtue". The Yu family inherited five generations of people, Yu Youyuan, Yu Quanji, Yu Xiuchu, Yu Wuqing and Yu Luzhen, and perfected and adhered to the 24-character business purpose of "authentic medicinal materials, fine preparation, genuine goods, fair prices, fair treatment, famous doctors sitting in the hall, curing diseases and saving lives". In addition to selling Chinese medicine, it also uses "deer and crane" as a mark, and supplies pills, powders, pastes and pills with unique secret recipes to the city, which are very popular among citizens. The Yu family has been in business for 121 years, and "Yu Tianchengtang" has spread to Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou. Yu Xiuchu, the third-generation descendant of the Yu family, was hired as the first Ah Da of Hu Qingyu Tang, and worked with Hu Xueyan to create the great cause of Jiangnan Medicine King. In 1903, Yu Luzhen sold Yu Tianchengtang to his in-law Shao Zuochen because of his extravagant spending and debt. Shao maintained the golden signboard of Yu Tianchengtang, inherited and carried forward the 24-character business purpose, continued to spend a lot of money to collect folk secret recipes, and devoted himself to research. The refined Chinese patent medicines were sold well in Shanghai and Suzhou and Hangzhou. In 1931, after several generations of research and accumulation, Yu Tianchengtang revised into three volumes of "Complete Collection of Pills and Powders" (divided into upper, middle and lower volumes) and one volume of "Complete Collection of Pills, Powders, Pastes and Pills", which recorded 488 secret recipes of Chinese patent medicines in the fields of internal medicine, gynecology, surgery, trauma, pediatrics, and lunatics. In 1937, Yu Tianchengtang was bombed to ashes by Japanese planes, and the Shao family opened a "Yu Tianchengtang branch" on Yan'an East Road in the city. In 1939, the Shao family returned to Songjiang and built a two-story house on the original site to resume business. In 1946, it was rebuilt into a fake three-story building with a total area of 420 square meters. On the opening day, the colorful cards were sterilized, a stage was set up for opera performances, and sika deer were slaughtered in public. Various medicines were discounted to reward customers, which was unprecedented. After liberation, in 1956, the public and private sectors were jointly operated, and Yu Tianchengtang added new medicine business. In the early 1980s, Yu Tiancheng resumed the outpatient business of famous doctors. In 1992, it was named "China Time-honored Brand". In 1997, due to road widening, the old building was demolished and a new business building was built, with an area of 2,443 square meters. There are currently 14 famous doctors in the hall, including 7 deputy chief physicians. From 1956 to 2008, for more than 50 years, the century-old inheritance of the famous store style has given new content to the 24-character business purpose of Yu's family. With the business policy of "quality first, customer first, business with morality, and business with integrity", it has won the trust of Songjiang citizens. Yu Tianchengtang Chinese Medicine belongs to the "traditional medicine" project, and its characteristics are famous Chinese medicine practitioners and famous Chinese patent medicines. After more than 200 years of inheritance, Yu Tianchengtang now has 14 famous Chinese medicine practitioners, and its 24-character store management policy has always been adhered to by the operator, but the famous Chinese patent medicine is currently not qualified for production. In order to benefit mankind, taking the opportunity of applying for Shanghai Intangible Cultural Heritage Project, with the support of policies and the government, we will find the "driving point" for the development of Chinese medicine, continuously improve Chinese medicine medical technology, form a domestically influential specialty, and at the same time develop Chinese patent medicines that can treat common diseases of modern citizens.
