The Taishan Dongyue Temple Fair is a comprehensive folk activity that integrates religious culture and commercial trade. It has long been popular in the Taishan Dongyue Temple in Tai'an City, Shandong Province. It originated from the folk worship of Taishan and the belief in Dongyue Emperor and Bixia Yuanjun. It was initially formed in the Han Dynasty, developed in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and gradually flourished in the Yuan, Ming, Qing and Republic of China. Since the Song Dynasty, the 28th day of the third lunar month, the birthday of Dongyue Emperor, was designated as the sacrificial day, thus forming a fixed period for the Dongyue Temple Fair. After the founding of New China, the Taishan Temple Fair was once replaced by irregular material exchange fairs. During the "Cultural Revolution", even the material exchange fair was cancelled. In 1986, the Taishan Temple Fair was restored in the area of the former site of Daiyue Temple. The meeting period was from May 6th to 12th of the Gregorian calendar. In addition to normal religious activities, the content of the temple fair was mainly material trading, cultural entertainment and tourism activities. The 1991 Taishan Temple Fair lasted for six days, with 1.2 million participants. In 1992, the scale of the Taishan Temple Fair was expanded, with Hongmen Road as the central axis, starting from Baihequan in the south, Guandi Temple in the north, Puzhao Temple in the west, and Wangmu Pool in the east, covering an area of one square kilometer, and the fair period was extended to ten days. The Taishan Dongyue Temple Fair is an important part of Chinese folk culture. It originated from the folks, with distinctive characteristics, grand scale, rich content, and standardized fair system. It embodies the unique life, value, morality, philosophy and political, economic and cultural life of the Chinese nation. The Taishan Dongyue Temple Fair is a model of temple fair culture in my country and even the world. In the process of development, its influence radiates across the country and becomes the source of Dongyue Temple Fairs in various places. At present, some excellent folk cultural styles in the Taishan Dongyue Temple Fair are in an endangered state and need to be protected urgently.
