The water dragon dance is a unique dragon dance among traditional Chinese folk customs, including the celestial dragon, coiled dragon, colorful dragon, lantern dragon, fire dragon, water dragon, fish dragon, peach dragon, silkworm dragon, small golden dragon, bench dragon, Zijiang dragon, and medicine dragon. The place where the water dragon dance was invented is Chating Township, Yanting County, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province, located in the Longtan Folk Culture Scenic Area, bordering Yanting and Zitong counties in the north-central part of the Sichuan Basin. The area is a transition zone from deep hills to high mountains, with high mountains, wide ridges, lush forests, abundant grass, deep valleys, crisscrossing streams and rivers, and lakes and pools connected. The forest coverage rate reaches 74%. Hundreds of precious Chinese herbal medicines grow wild in the valleys, hence the name Medicine Valley. Now there is still a remarkable original ecology of green mountains, green land, green trees, and green water. Water dragon dance is also called "driving away drought demon". This activity originated before King Yu controlled floods. When drought occurred in nature, people thought it was the ghost "Drought Demon" causing trouble. In order to fight drought, pray for rain, ensure a good harvest and ensure safety, people came up with the idea of fighting drought demon, driving away ghosts and monsters, and playing with water dragons to pray for nectar. To survive, to eat food and to have rain, the idea was to drive away drought demon. In the struggle of life, our ancestors started the collective folk activities of driving away drought demon and playing with water dragons to pray for rain. In the long-term development, it gradually integrated folk music and dance art, forming a relatively perfect "Water Dragon Dance". The activities of the water dragon dance are closely related to the vital interests of the production and life struggles of the ancient and modern people. At the same time, it reflects the resistance spirit of the working people in their struggle against gods and ghosts, and highlights the scientific value of praying for rain and obtaining grains. The dragon body is made of wild bamboo and palm leaves, and water is sprayed with pig urine bags. The local craftsmanship reflects and maintains the original flavor, original ecological ancient color, ancient fragrance, and simple real life image of the water dragon dance. In ancient times, whenever there was a long drought without rain, the crops were scorched, the land had no food to produce, the hungry had no food to eat, and the thirsty had no springs to drink, people would carry out the activities of playing with water dragons to drive away the drought demon. Not only in this area, but also in the surrounding Zitong County, Nanbu County, Shehong County, Santai County and other areas, they performed water dragon dances. When the water dragon drove the drought demon into the water, thunder rumbled and rain fell from the sky. People sang in unison with joy: "Drive away the drought demon, drive away the drought demon, drive away the drought demon and let the rain fall." After becoming one of the first batch of intangible cultural heritage expansion projects in Sichuan Province, the water dragon dance has been frequently performed in urban and rural areas, and has been performed in many areas of the city and other counties.
