Shaanxi
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Yandi is the great ancestor of the Chinese nation. Baoji, Shaanxi is the hometown of Yandi and the birthplace of Jiangyan culture. According to folklore, the worship of Yandi in Baoji can be traced back to the Yellow Emperor period. About 5,000 years ago, Yandi died in Tiantai Mountain, Baoji, after accidentally tasting Huoyanzi, commonly known as "heart-breaking grass". When the Yellow Emperor heard the news, he rushed to Tiantai Mountain from Jishui, a tributary of the Wei River, to pay tribute. There are still remains of the incense burner in Tiantai Mountain, which is said to be the place where the Yellow Emperor worshipped Yandi. In the third year of Qin Linggong (422 BC), the Qin people established the Shangtian Temple and Shangtian Temple in Wushan to worship Yandi and Huangdi respectively, creating a precedent for official worship of Yandi in my country. In the Western Han Dynasty, Emperor Gaozu of Han, Liu Bang, called himself "the son of the Red Emperor" and set up a special Tian Temple to worship Yandi. This custom lasted until the period of Emperor Wu of Han. In the 30th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1765), Shennong Temple was rebuilt, and it was renovated twice around 1931 and before the founding of New China. In addition to this temple, there is also a Shennong Temple on Shenwu Road in Jintai District, also known as the "Xiannong Temple" and "Xiannong Altar". The "Baoji County Records and System" rebuilt during the Qianlong period records: "Every year, on the date announced by the Ministry, fast for three days in advance. The chief priests all wear court robes and gather at the altar." Since the 1980s, folk activities to worship Emperor Yan have also quietly emerged. Baoji Yan Emperor Festival is a direct expression of the Chinese nation's virtue of respecting ancestors, and is also an important way to enhance national cohesion and cultural identity.
