Cuotaiji is an ancient drama form that only exists in Luga Village, Bandi Township, Weining Yi, Hui and Miao Autonomous County, Guizhou Province. Cuotaiji is the transliteration of Yi language, which means "transformation drama". There is no definitive answer to when this drama form originated, and there is no record in Yi literature. Cuotaiji is usually performed from the third to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, aiming to drive away evil spirits, usher in good luck, and pray for a good harvest. Its performance form is very unique. The performers wrap their heads with white headscarves into a pointed cone shape, and wrap their bodies and limbs tightly with cloth to symbolize nakedness; some people wear masks and dress up as Yi old men (1,700 years old), old women (1,500 years old), Miao old men (1,200 years old), Han old men (1,000 years old) and children. The mask is usually about one foot long, with a protruding forehead, a straight nose, and holes dug out for the eyes and mouth. It is painted black with pot smoke, and various lines are drawn on the forehead and face with lime and chalk. The black and white are extremely rough, mysterious, strict and simple. The person who does not wear a mask in the performance is the old man of the forest or the mountain god (2000 years old), who is the embodiment of nature and wisdom. The performance of Cuotaiji is mainly divided into four parts: sacrifice, farming, celebration, and village sweeping. Among them, farming is the core of the whole play, which mainly reflects the history of Yi migration, farming, and reproduction. The village sweeping activity on the 15th day of the first lunar month, also known as the "sweeping Mars" activity, has pushed the entire Cuotaiji performance to a climax. The performers go from village to village to sweep away disasters and plagues, and wish for the prosperity of people and livestock and a good harvest. At each house, they have to sit by the fire and recite a lucky blessing, and ask the owner for eggs and hemp, and pull a handful of grass from the four corners of the firewood room when they leave. After that, they came to the intersection of the village, buried three eggs in the soil, lit the straw, cooked the rest of the eggs and shared them, chanting "Mars is gone, Mars is gone". Cuotaiji has become an important way for local people to worship their ancestors and pray for the prosperity of people and livestock and good weather because of its folk belief and ancestor worship functions. It is deeply rooted in the production, life and cultural history of the Yi people. This primitive art has research value in drama genesis and art morphology. Among them, the performance activities related to production and life are also of great reference value for the research of anthropology and ethnology. Cuotaiji has been passed down because it has been spread in a remote area and has been less affected by the outside world. However, under the impact of modern civilization, this art that is only mastered and inherited by a few people is very fragile. Any problem in any link will cause it to suffer a fatal blow. Therefore, it is necessary to do a good job in related protection.
