The Miao Couple Dance, also known as "Stepping on the Moon" in Miao language, is a Miao folk dance that combines Lusheng playing and dance performance. The dancers are composed of several couples. This dance is usually performed during the traditional Miao festivals of "Jiaohua" or "Jiaoyue" and is very ornamental. Now this dance is often performed in various welcoming ceremonies and festivals. During the performance, men and women wear beautiful Miao costumes, which are usually only worn on important occasions. The male dancer holds a one-meter-long curved Lusheng in his hand, plays it while swinging the Lusheng left and right or up and down, while the female dancer waves, claps or shakes her hands to the rhythm of the Lusheng. The whole dance is permeated with "love". It shows the romantic process of Miao men and women from meeting, knowing each other, falling in love, to staying together for a lifetime. The Miao Couple Dance is popular in the Miao villages around Jialin Village, Machang Town, Pingba County, Guizhou Province. The Miao compatriots in Jialin Village have a simple and wonderful legend about "Couple Dance Stepping on the Moon". It is said that during the migration of the Miao ancestors in ancient times, the Miao King had a daughter who was attacked by a tiger. At the critical moment, a brave Miao young man shot the tiger to death with his bow and arrow and saved the Miao King's daughter. In order to thank the young man, the Miao King betrothed his daughter to him. However, the young man was not a person who wanted to curry favor with the rich and powerful, so he declined the kindness of the Miao King and his daughter. The Miao King was very moved and determined to marry his daughter. So he ordered the craftsmen to make a bent reed pipe in the shape of the bow and arrow carried by the young man, and then asked someone to give the bent reed pipe to the young man as a gift, and the young man accepted the reed pipe. On a moonlit night, the young man blew the reed pipe, and the beautiful sound attracted the beautiful Miao King's daughter. The girl danced with the reed pipe, and finally they fell in love and stayed together for the rest of their lives.
