Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve
Mount Nimba, located on the border of Guinea, Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire, rises high above the surrounding savannah. The grassy mountain pastures on its slopes are covered with dense forests at the foot. The mountain is particularly rich in flora and fauna, including endemic species such as viviparous toads and chimpanzees that use stones as tools.
Niokolo-Koba National Park
Located in a well-watered area along the Gambia River, Niokolo-Koba National Park's gallery forests and savannahs are home to a very rich fauna, including gemsbok (the largest antelope), chimpanzees, lions, leopards and large numbers of elephants, as well as many species of birds, reptiles and amphibians.
Salonga National Park
Salonga National Park is the largest tropical rainforest reserve in Africa. Located in the heart of the Central Congo River Basin, the park is so remote that it can only be reached by water. It is home to many local endangered species, such as the pygmy chimpanzee, the Congo peacock, the forest elephant and the African slender-nosed crocodile or "false" crocodile.
Manas Wildlife Sanctuary
Located on the gentle slopes of the Himalayan foothills, where wooded hills give way to alluvial grasslands and tropical forests, the Manas Conservancy is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including many endangered species such as tigers, pygmy hogs, Indian rhinos and Indian elephants.
Virunga National Park
Virunga National Park (790,000 hectares) has an extremely diverse range of habitats, from swamps and grasslands to the Rwenzori snowfields at over 5,000 metres above sea level, from lava plains to savannahs on the slopes of volcanoes. The park is home to mountain gorillas, around 20,000 hippos live in the river and Siberian birds spend the winter here.
