Aapravasi Ghat

In the Port Louis district sits a 1,640 square meter site where the modern indentured diaspora began. In 1834, the British government chose the island of Mauritius as the first site for its so-called “great experiment” to replace slaves with “free” labor. Between 1834 and 1920, nearly half a million indentured laborers arrived at Aapravasi Ghat from India to work on Mauritius’ sugar plantations or were transferred to Réunion Island, Australia, South and East Africa, or the Caribbean. The architecture of Aapravasi Ghat is one of the earliest explicit manifestations of what would become a global economic system and one of the largest migrations in history.

Sydney Opera House

Completed in 1973, the Sydney Opera House is a great work of 20th century architecture, incorporating a variety of ideas and innovations in terms of architectural form and structural design. Set in a magnificent waterscape, at the tip of a peninsula jutting into Sydney Harbour, this great urban sculpture has had a lasting impact on architecture. The Sydney Opera House consists of three interconnected sets of arched "shells" with roofs covering two main performance halls and a restaurant. The shells are set on a large platform and surrounded by terrace areas that serve as pedestrian lobbies. In 1957, an international jury awarded the project for the Sydney Opera House to Danish architect Jørn Utzon, marking a radically new approach to architecture.

Central Zone of the Town of Angra do Heroismo in the Azores

Angra, located on one of the islands of the Azores, was a port of call from the 15th century until the advent of steam engines in the 19th century. The 400-year-old fortifications of São Sebastian and São João Baptista are unique examples of military architecture. Angra was damaged in the 1980 earthquake and is currently under restoration.

Statue of Liberty

This towering monument to liberty was built in Paris by French sculptor Bartholdi in collaboration with Gustave Eiffel (who designed the steel frame) as a gift from France on the occasion of the centennial of American independence. Completed in 1886, the sculpture stands at the entrance to New York Harbor and has welcomed millions of immigrants to the United States ever since.
