Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens

The Royal Exhibition Building and its surrounding Carlton Gardens were designed for the great International Exhibitions held in Melbourne in 1880 and 1888. The building and grounds were designed by Joseph Reid. The building is constructed of brick and timber, steel and stone. It incorporates elements of Byzantine, Romanesque, Lombard and Italian Renaissance styles. The building is typical of the International Exposition movement, which saw more than 50 exhibitions held between 1851 and 1915 in places such as Paris, New York, Vienna, Calcutta, Kingston (Jamaica) and Santiago (Chile). All the expositions had a common theme and aim: to record material and moral progress by showcasing the industries of nations.

North China Military Region Martyrs Cemetery

The Martyrs Cemetery of the North China Military Region is a department-level institution directly under the Civil Affairs Department of Hebei Province. It is located at No. 343, Zhongshan West Road, Shijiazhuang City, the provincial capital, and covers an area of 210,000 square meters. It is one of the famous martyrs cemeteries in my country that was built early, on a large scale, and with high architectural specifications. It was built in the autumn of 1948 at the suggestion of Commander-in-Chief Zhu De to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs who died in North China. Construction began in March 1950 and was completed and opened to the public on August 1, 1954. It is the first batch of key protection units of martyr memorial buildings in the country named by the State Council, a national patriotism education demonstration base named by the Central Propaganda Department, one of the top 100 red tourism classic scenic spots in the country named by the Central Propaganda Department and other seven ministries and commissions, and a national patriotism education base for primary and secondary schools named by six ministries and commissions including the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Civil Affairs. It is a national national defense education demonstration base. Internationalist fighters Bethune, Dr. Ke Dihua, the commander of the Hui Muslim Detachment - "national hero" Ma Benzhai, and the "mother of the soldiers" Rong Guanxiu and other famous martyrs are buried or placed here. Over the years, the construction and development of the North China Military Region Martyrs Cemetery has always received the care and support of party committees and governments at all levels. Mao Zedong, Liu Shaoqi, Zhu De, Peng Dehuai, Deng Xiaoping and other older generation proletarian revolutionaries have successively written inscriptions for the cemetery, expressing their high hopes and entrustments.
