Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes
Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes encompass three sites with a total area of 18,846 hectares. These include Geomun Oreum, considered the world's finest lava tube system, with colorful carbonate roofs and floors and dark lava walls; Seongsan Ilchulbong, a fortress-like tuff cone rising from the sea, offering spectacular views; and Hallasan, South Korea's highest mountain, with waterfalls, multi-shaped rock formations and a lake-filled crater. The site is of extraordinary aesthetic beauty and bears witness to the history, characteristics and processes of the Earth.
Virunga National Park
Virunga National Park (790,000 hectares) has an extremely diverse range of habitats, from swamps and grasslands to the Rwenzori snowfields at over 5,000 metres above sea level, from lava plains to savannahs on the slopes of volcanoes. The park is home to mountain gorillas, around 20,000 hippos live in the river and Siberian birds spend the winter here.
