Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains
The Barberton Makhonwa Mountains are located in northeastern South Africa and comprise 40% of the Barberton Greenstone Belt, one of the oldest geological formations in the world. The property represents the best-preserved sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks dating back to 3.6 to 3.25 billion years ago and is a treasure trove of information on surface conditions, meteorite impacts, volcanic activity, continental formation processes and the environment of early life.
Bahla Fort
The prosperity of the Bahla oasis is attributed to the Banu Nebhan, the dominant tribe in the area from the 12th to the late 15th century. The ruins of this massive fortress, with its walls and towers made of unfired bricks and stone foundations, are typical of this type of fortification and testify to the Banu Nebhan's power.
Itchan Kala
Ichan Kala is the inner city of the old Khiva oasis (protected by a brick wall about 10 meters high), and was the last resting place for caravans before crossing the desert to Iran. Although few very ancient remains now remain, it is a coherent and well-preserved Central Asian Muslim architecture in a unique style. There are several outstanding buildings here, such as the Juma Mosque, mausoleums and madrasas, as well as two magnificent palaces built by the Alaquli Khan in the early 19th century.
