Cidade Velha, Historic Centre of Ribeira Grande
Renamed Cidade Velha in the late 18th century, the town of Ribeira Grande was the first European colonial outpost in the tropics. Located in the south of Santiago Island, the town retains some of its original street layout and impressive ruins, including two churches, a royal fortress and the Pillory Square, with its ornate 16th-century marble columns.
San Pedro de la Roca Castle, Santiago de Cuba
Commercial and political competition in the Caribbean in the 17th century led to the construction of a series of large fortifications on rocky promontories to protect the vital port of Santiago. This complex of forts, magazines, bastions, and batteries is the most complete and best-preserved example of Spanish American military architecture, based on Italian and Renaissance design principles.
